I think it also has something to do with extremely loud mastering since the mid-90's. Many remastered versions of classic albums sound as boring as the new ones.

It's very hard to find a mainstram album with good sound quality nowadays.
Take Metallica or Red Hot Chili Peppers as example. They had some of the best produced albums in the early 90's and some of the worst produced albums in history in recent years. But the songs itself aren't that bad, it's the mastering that ruins everything.

I don't listen much to pop music, but the Bruno Mars albums produced like the original mastering of Michael Jackson's Bad (2001 SE and Bad 25 suck) would be amazing.

Though he's not the only one doing it, when it comes to RHCP and Metallica that's mostly Rick Rubin's fault. That said an aggressive, compressed mix is actually suitable for certain music in my opinion, there are bits on Californication where I prefer the official release (Parallel Universe, Around the World) and others where I like the "quiet mix" you can find on youtube (Californication itself, for example)

To address the OP's point I certainly understand where you are coming from, as someone who listens to a lot of music that was made many years before I was born (I'm actually listening to The Cure right now, for example) the overwhelming majority of modern popular music does absolutely nothing for me, but people are right to point out that, even if you have to look a bit harder for it, there is lots of great new music out there.

If you can try listening to some less mainstream radio stations, the type who tend not to be swayed so much by chart positions and just play what they like because they think it's good. That said a lot of my music on my iPod is older, and if I was asked to list my all time favourite albums I think the most modern is still from 2001 (Muse - Origin of Symmetry), most well before that :)

There's stilll great stuff today, but the mainstream is much worse than decades ago.

I'm glad that some mastering engineers try to restore the original fidelity to avoid a lost generation of music.

Exactly, it's a nice feeling listening to a favourite album that's been given a proper remaster and sounds even better then before - the recent round of Pink Floyd remasters are good examples I'd say

Yes, the Pink Floyd reissues are good, but the old CDs were also great. Is starts to get annoying to see new issues every few years. I took the 5.1 DTS-HD MA of The Dark Side of The Moon Blu-ray and mixed all channels into a stereo file. Sounds amazing and better than the original stereo mix.

True, though I'll be honest I don't pay much attention to the specific version I buy so long as it's some sort of remaster. Probably not the very best way to go but I'm not a massive audiophile and unless the production is truly terrible I'll usually listen to it, though I can tell the difference between older and newer versions fairly well

Why is mainstream always bad? I think music is doing just fine. And I'm not a teenager that goes with the trends either.

well, 99% of the music of nowadays is never in the radio or on tv so that you just have to listen to music which isn't on tv or the most famous radio stations if you think that music is bad.

I don't think music is worse as it was 20 or even 50 years ago but mainstream music changed much in the direction that the lyrics or instruments aren't that important anymore (except for the "ohh they put a saxophone in the track now it will be a hit in clubs")

but... but... the Saxo is amazing :(

It's my favorite instrument by far

I didn't mean that a saxophone is bad, just that it seems to be one of very few instruments right now many people still care about and if we talk about the saxophone, also only if it is used in a track used for "club music"

I don't see many tracks in the charts where people would say they find it so great because of the cello or something more like "the bass dude, the bass"

Guitar chords must be similar to Diary of a Madman/Rhandy Rhoads. I'm so glad someone finnally decided to use those open string chords again. The video is obviously a homage to Seasame Sreet, PeeWees Playhouse, Mr Rodgers neighborhood.

Well, depending on your point of view it may not be - taste in music is one of the single most subjective things a person can decide on, and you will never reach a consensus on this question.

Personally, though I would not say that mainstream automatically equals bad, I find that older music shows greater musicianship and passions from the artists themselves  more of the time and is far more likely to actually say something interesting or relevent which I find far easier to relate to than most pop music. There are of course exceptions - Daft Punk's latest album was enormously successful and is a favourite of mine, but on the whole I find most big successful acts are overly manufactured facades formulated to make as much money as possible which just leads to the uninspired homogenisation of the whole market (not unlike AAA games actually)

Of course, that's just my own view, if someone criticises you for your's then tell them where to stick it, at the end of the day your taste is only truly relevent to you and you only, just as mine is to me :)

Adele is the most popular musician today...she aint auto tunes or sexed up. Do you like her?

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Music is going the way of the movies , the huge releases are extremely engineered to appeal to the lowest common denominator to appeal to the widest possible audience. As always, in an effort to please everyone the product has to be extremely bland and safe. It sucks, but what sucks more is that gaming is taking the same path. Well well, it was fun while it lasted.

Fortunately though there will always be people who will refuse to conform - they may not get all that rich or famous, but you can be damn sure they'll spread a hell of a lot more joy and touch a lot more hearts than a hundred Katy Perrys or One Directions :)

Theres a lot of great music being made, you just need to know where to look ^.^

Some of my favorite albums of 2013 are:
...Like Clockwork - Queens of the Stone Age

Indeed, there will always be people who appreciate the craftmanship and art in the work they do, it used to be a standard in the arts, now it's being relagated to the 'indie' section of the market. For music this will work well, for movies it's not so great since production coasts to do something decent are pretty high, for games, I don't know. I have hopes that tools are getting good enough and cheap enough that there will be solid quality and good accessibility for indie games.
