Well, depending on your point of view it may not be - taste in music is one of the single most subjective things a person can decide on, and you will never reach a consensus on this question.
Personally, though I would not say that mainstream automatically equals bad, I find that older music shows greater musicianship and passions from the artists themselves more of the time and is far more likely to actually say something interesting or relevent which I find far easier to relate to than most pop music. There are of course exceptions - Daft Punk's latest album was enormously successful and is a favourite of mine, but on the whole I find most big successful acts are overly manufactured facades formulated to make as much money as possible which just leads to the uninspired homogenisation of the whole market (not unlike AAA games actually)
Of course, that's just my own view, if someone criticises you for your's then tell them where to stick it, at the end of the day your taste is only truly relevent to you and you only, just as mine is to me :)
