Forums - General Discussion - Nintendo launches a successor to the WiiU in late 2015

I would be seriously pissed off for buying the Wii U, and would never buy any Nintendo home console again.
But of course, this scenario is never happening.

They would lose a truckload of money on each unit or launch at an astronomical price, shit on their investors, piss of their fanbase for having to upgrade so soon and present a platform that they themselves would have to use twice as much time and money to develop for and that no one else in the world would develop for.
An allround bad deal.

Not trying to be rude but some people are in clear denial. The Wii U is selling worse than the Dreamcast, and while the DC had to compete with the PS2 launch around this time in its lifespan the Wii U has both the PS4 (which has already probably outsold it in NA and is sure to be a beast in Europe and Japan as well) AND the Xbox One which will primarily be going after the North American market. I don't doubt Nintendo's relevance, I feel the company is the most needed of the three but let's be honest, with this competition there is only so much Mario can do.

People are saying the Wii U owners will be burned by this but to that I ask... what Wii U owners? The barely 4 million? I'd wager there is a huge chance of that being mostly core fans such as myself and you all.

Now I for one agree it would definitely be an uphill battle re-entering the generation in the 2015 holidays even with a console more capable than the other two, but let's be honest if anyone could do it, it's Nintendo. They are a marketing powerhouse (though clearly they are in a creative drought with the Wii U marketing) and they have the most beloved franchises in the industry. If say this holiday season fails to be a turnaround for the Wii U, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't try again in 2015. Now I'm not saying completely abandon the Wii U, I think they should keep supporting it with titles already far into production/ smaller titles and indie titles. Then just port development of Smash Bros 4. and probably Zelda (we all know it's gonna get delayed anyway) over to the new console as well as titles early in development and just come out with guns blazing in 2015. Go ahead and get the third parties they know will support them (Ubisoft, Activision, etc) on board and don't skip even the shortest beat with marketing.

I know it sounds like I'm a hater, but I'm really not. I am a huge fan of Nintendo and honestly most of this criticism is because I hate to see the company in such a dire situation and I want them to do better, try harder- because I know they can. The Sega comparisons are ridiculously misinformed statements... the two companies are in MUCH different circumstances and it's also a much different era of gaming and technology in general.

Would burn its Wii U userbase.

Would be more expensive than the X1 and PS4.

Developers wouldn't make games for a new system half way thru a new gen when the others will have a decent userbase by then.

Asking for disaster.

All of these things.

They could probably release a tablet with the specs of the Wii-U by 2015, wich is what i expect them to do. This would also mean developers will start to use the Wii-U current tablet controller a lot more. Tablet's like the Asus T100 are already very close in power compared to the Wii-U only lacking in graphical power, and that only costs $350 with a keyboard dock.

Though since i'm not sure that the PowerPC architecture is really usable for a mobile platform, it's also possible that they release a tablet with different hardware but that would mean Wii-U is left out to dry.

In fact they could simply launch it as a redesign of the Wii-U.

I agree with the tablet part, but I think the Wii/Wii U brand is going to be sent to pasture as soon as they can get rid of it. It's clearly worn out its sales appeal and at this point may be a negative more than it is an asset.

Yes the Wii-U as we know it would be replaced entirely offcourse, but by making sure new games also work on Wii-U systems already sold(wich will probably be atleast 10m+ by that time) they won't have to leace loyal customers in the dry.

One more thing... why does everyone keep calling 2015 the "middle" of the generation? I'm pretty sure this generation is shaping up to be another 7-8 year gen rather than a 5-6 year one. 2015 will be comparable to 2007-2008 of last gen, which, unless I'm mistaken, is where things really started to pick up for the HD twins.

Perhaps. Don't know what they would name it, maybe Nintendo GX or something (after their API), 2 to 3 TF GPU, 9-core enhanced Espresso CPU (knowing them, they'll do this), 16 to 24GB RAM for games, 128GB Flash Memory and 512GB Flash Memory SKUs, there's something they can probably do. Will it be a success? Needs a good gimmick (using the term "gimmick" as a positive term, not the apparent negative meaning). Maybe Iwata wont be there.....?

What would happen? I don't know. What I do know is that I wouldn't buy it.

What if it came out with the next mario Galaxy, Metroid or Zelda? Do you buy Nintendo consoles early usually?

For you to understand my point of view I need to give you the long answer.

*No, I don't usually buy systems early. I am not the type to rush out and buy something because it is new. My job is encourage others to do that. Neither do I tie myself to any brand or company. Again it is my job is to get people to worship brands, not fall into the trap myself. So not a fanboy.

Why I like Nintendo. I like Nintendo simply because they do what MS and Sony don't. Nintendo creates great fantasy and fun games with brilliant art styles. Not a touch of realism. So many people keep going on about wanting realism in games that I believe they must be living in fantasy and gaming is the reality they are after. No offense to anyone intended.

I live in reality and rather have my game fantastical. Give me more Zelda with weird and wonderful artwork than a realistic looking, life like shooter any day. That doesn't mean I do not partake in a good FPS or driving sim. I enjoy these as well but I can take or leave them. I do wish Nintendo did more realistic looking games for the overall versatility of the console however.

I am therefore in a small minority but that pleases me. Why be like everyone else, eh?

So I would be disappointted if Nintendo released another console after three years. It would like they are forcing me to upgrade to a new and more expensive console (based on your hypothesis it would be an expensive system) to play the games you suggested. Whereas I think five years or more is an ideal lifetime for a console before it's direct successor is launched. Other consoles give their userbase a good few years. Why should I not be entitled to that?

In other words - and for the want of a more direct phrase - they would be taking the piss. You know, taking their fan base as mugs. I would consider it wrong.

* My current housemate works in store that sell consoles and he has hooked me up with a good PS4 deal. I have paid him the money but yet to see the console....uuumm. Therefore if there is a good deal going I will buy a item early. I am not that stupid.

Also clients that I do work for do offer me lots of freebies and discounts on the items we advertise.

It would be one of the worst decisions they've ever made. All they can do from this point is make the Wii U as attractive to buyers as possible. Stem the bleeding. Hope for better results than GameCube. It'd do-able.
