Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii production to end in Japan

Source: http://gematsu.com/2013/10/wii-production-to-end-in-japan

Nintendo will soon end production of the original Wii in Japan.

A notice on the console’s Japanese website confirms the news. It reads “production will soon end.”

Wii has sold 12.7 million units in Japan since its 2006 launch, according to Game Data Museum, and over 100 million units worldwide.

Thanks, Game Jouhou.

i shall always the remember the Revolution that was Wii.

they should've ended the DS rather than the Wii, atleast the Wii sold a thousand, the DS is selling fucking 20 units everyweek!

That's what I thought when I saw this news.  Maybe they're thinking the final numbers vs. PS2 will be that close that they'll need those 20 units lol

Get Your Portable ID!Lord of Ratchet and Clank

Duke of Playstation Plus

Warden of Platformers

I wonder if they will keep the Wii Mini going?

GAF seems to think this is WW not just Japan.

Seems pretty early...
Especially when you consider they didn't discontinue the Famicom and the Super Famicom until 2003...

Have a nice day...

But Wii isn't selling, this year they won't even reach 2m for FY which ends in march, if they kept it going it wouldn't sell more than a million.

No point keeping the production lines open for such small numbers.

Good move imo. Wii U doesn't need any more competition than it already has, so pulling the plug for Wii means one competitor less, maybe some people will choose another Nintendo home console now, the Wii U, plus no more misunderstandings, only Wii U on shelves lol.

And the biggest reason why it's a great move. Wii won't outsell the PS1!!!!!!!! Fuck yeah baby!!!!

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Then why did they keep the NES going for so long?

"The NES/Famicom's production run is the longest lasting of any video game console, spanning 20 years from July 1983 to September 2003, before being discontinued in Japan."
