Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: Dedicated Fans Keeping Vita from Getting Shelved

If it wasn't for the loud group of consumers preaching about the Vita, the handheld might not even be around.

by Josiah Renaudin on 26th Sep, 2013

The PlayStation Vita didn’t start its long retail journey with the whole world on its side. A hefty price point, lack of software, and post-iPhone world all contributed to a difficult beginning for Sony’s second handheld console, but a band of dedicated owners have recently formed. People who have actually purchased and played the Vita seem to swear by its many features and possibilities, and if it wasn’t for this evangelist group, the device might not even be around anymore.

A new interview by CVG with UK managing director Fergal Gara addresses the core group hoisting the Vita up, and how that contingent is needed for the handheld to live.

“I mean, if that wasn't the case I think we would have good reason to lose confidence in the device and shelve it,” Gara said of this rabid fanbase. “We're nowhere close to that decision now.”

This strong positive response hasn’t gone to Sony’s head, though. The company knows there are drawbacks to the Vita.

“There has been great positive feedback, but I want people to know that we do listen intently to the negative feedback, too,” he continued. “We understand the drawbacks - it's a bit expensive, also people expect multi-functionality on high-end mobile and portable devices, the content is expensive and a lot of people are used to getting free or cheap apps.

“But I took a look at the UK figures the other day, and PS Vita is now selling for about £70 less than this time last year, and the games are getting cheaper too, and we've got a Mega-Pack program, which is eight to ten games and a memory stick rolled in for free, and we've seen that as an attractive proposition.”

The price cut has eliminated one of the biggest knocks against the Vita, and with so many indie games releasing in the coming months, there might soon be little to complain about.

Mine too! ps vita+ps plus combo: TOTALLY LOVE IT

It´s a great device, for sure. It only needs a little personality.
Marketing it like a smaller-Ps3 wasn´t smart.It´s not meant to be a home-console-like

It is what it is: a portable console providing portable gaming experiences.

I use my Vita everyday before going to bed. I might not always play games, but its a great device. I have been using it for skype aswell as i play DW8 and other games on PS3 with a friend and talk to him through the Vita with no need for any sort of headset. All this while sitting in the couch.

There are some pretty fun games aswell and the PSP digital games are incredibly cheap. If you missed something or didnt buy a PSP it perfect. All games go for around 7 euros. Vita games go from 15 to 35 euros. Its alot cheaper on the long term compared to the 3DS.

Being loud is a double-edged sword. In many cases it's for bad, in this case it's for good. Good for the Vita.

Bad for other cases where being the verbal community leads to problems like bashing competitive consoles, bashing fans of competitive consoles, over-hyping content on your preferred console almost to the point of denial if bad reviews are given, and so on and so forth.

People will say that all fans are equal, but Sony themselves recognize the outspokenness of their community. And this is not the first time, they said the same about the PS4's reveal and about how good they felt that their fans were verbal and passionate about their satisfaction with the console. So though all groups have their fanboys, it is clear that the Sony community is the most outspoken. The danger once again is that this leads to uproars and consequences of herd mentality where the majority gets its way, when the majority is not always right. Even, often, situations of uproar are an opportunity for bad fans to spit venom and throw tomatoes at the direction of their less preferred companies, we saw it with the xbox one.

I'm just stating the obvious, and am supported by Sony themselves. Hopefully that helps people understand the reason why many people see Sony fans as a different beast (in general). Having said all that, there are a good number of wonderful Sony fans, some better than many fans of other consoles. So though there is a difference between the fans of differing preference (in general), still there are the gems that shine brightly and make their communities look good. May they always continue to shine.

yeah, because that is helping Playstation brand right now. Don't be selfish gamers, it is hurting Sony and not only that, they seem they are not willing to give any support to it beyond a second screen for the PS4.
At least Nintendo is releasing a bunch of games by the end of the year for the Wii U, and bundles also, plus a discount.
What I am trying to say is that a company won't survive long enough if they just only listen to people outside their company (fans and developers), because they want the best for the least. Sony needs to think on themselves, they need to make a product that is adequate for the marketing terms of price. For example, a PS1 and PS2.

If I wanted FF4 the complete collection on the Vita, would I be able to get it for 7 euros?

Nevermind, I found it here at 19.99$.
