Yes and no. The staff prioritized telling the first class passengers, but still most of the lower class did wind up on deck. In fact, if you trust wikipedia then the lower class passengers actually had a soccer game with a block of ice going on during the sinking. And hypothermia did kill most of the ones there, eventuallly.

Still, there are things you can do. Wool was a popular outer clothing fabric because it retains something like 90% of it's insulative properties, even if it's wet. It's just a matter of making or finding a way to stay out of the water for extended periods of time. The movie required blind luck to find a big bit of flotsam, but really so many things float it's got to be doable in a more controlled way. I expect no one thought to try because MacGuyver wasn't around back then.

Because children generally need their mothers more than their fathers. I am a father and I wouldn't hesitate to give my life for my child or wife if it came to that. Before I had kids though, I probably would have been more selfish.

I really doubt there were people playing football duringthe sinking. The deck would be too inclined to make it possible. Maybe just after the crash, but not after people realized what was going on.

Wool may be insulative, but when wet it weights a ton and, more importantly, it restricts your movements, that paired with the weight and with a minor case of hypothermia is enough to make anyone drown.

Sure, there would be a lot of debris, but most of them would be too small to hold the weight of a grown adult or of an irregular shape that would make them unstable and prone to overturn. The best thing someone could have thought of would be a door, but to use one you should have to either throw it and then jump on its side early in the sinking, which would be very difficult as it was night, with no moon (I think) and you would have the trouble of finding the door once you were in the water; or wait until the ship has almost sunk and jump with the door, which would be even worse as any sinking object creates a whirlpool, that in the case of a ship would drag you with it to the bottom.

Whatever they wanted to do, they were screwed.
