Forums - Gaming Discussion - 4K TV Resolution Is Overrated

I saw one at Bestbuy too recently. The colours looked really good. Also you don't need to buy a 85" inch screen tv. Most people will get 40 to 55 inches. Here is a 55" Sony 4K tv for $5,000. Still expensive but the technology is new and far cry from the $25,000 the OP is making them sound.

The Sony rep told me you won't see as big of a difference of a 40-50 inch set. You need the bigger set to see the difference in detail. Shrugs. That was just what he was telling me.

In either case, to be honest, I don't see this really being a big deal to consumers. The big jump from SD to HD, this is just kind of a little hop by comparision, even if technically it's a large leap, how "eye pleasing" the image is definitely reaching a point of diminishing returns.

Can we call something overrated if nobody has it?

Sure you can, you can go see it for yourself if you live in any large city. I was expecting more, it just looked like a nice HDTV set, not much more, nothing less. No big deal.

Haven't seen any 4K TV for display in my country. The Sony store probably has one, so I will check the next time I go to the mall.

That is the problem with any future tv resolution advancements. Sony and other companies doing things like 4k or whatever else insane resolutions they are trying to strive for, should really go and talk to an optometrist

They need to be told that at some point the human eye can no longer tell the difference, so what is the point of going beyond that?

I figure the average person sits about 15 feet away from decently sized TV's these days. According to this chart that woudl equate to like a 125" TV before 4k becomes noticable.

To get full benefit at even say 10' it becomes like 150+ inch screen. Can't really determine full benefit for any distance longer than 10' away. But based on how 5' is 80", I figure 15' would be 220". As you can see to get the full benefit of a 4k tv, it needs to basically be a movie theater.

That's all 4k tv's will ever be. Movie theaters. If your a millionaire and have your own movie theater room, then you might buy a tv like this. But even if they were only $500, there is no point in them. You are not going to notice much of any difference based on where your sitting.

hmm, did you see an 80 inch 1080p tv in comparison? maybe it didn't look much sharper as a 55 inch 1080p tv but well, it's two different sizes.

but yeah, the price isn't that great atm

Wait who is rating 4k highly (other than maybe TV manufacturers) for something to be overated it needs people to be talking it up. And as far as I know everyone is saying that 4K is not worth it yet as content and price isn't there and you need a huge screen for it to be worth it.

Now 8K on the other hand now there is where it's at.

I sit around 10 feet away so a 55" 4K tv would be noticable for me. 10 to 5 feet is my preference and I would think most people sit around the 10 feet range, not 15.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Sony sort of screw in the TV division, all they mostly showed at CES were 4k tv and showcase 4K camera. Sounds very expensive. :(
