Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo shutting down Wii channels and online services

I hope they keep netfix open, I still use that shit.

I think that's up to Netflix, just like it's up to Google if they want to keep support for the Youtube app.  Either one could end their support for these apps but should have no need to terminate these services for the forseable future since they feed off of a common pool of content across all platforms.

Wii online play for games like MKW should be around for about 18-36 months before being shut down.

The Wii Shop Channel, who knows how long that one will last?

They have to leave shop channel open.

why?

-To sell games; all Wiiware & VC is also compatable with the Wii U in Wii mode.

-It is home to important software fixes, like the Skyward Sword save file fixer.

-It is the only way to get the Netflix, Youtube, Hulu+ or Amazon Instant video streaming apps.

that still doesnt answer my question they dont have to leave it open, they can shut it down if they want. Does the Wii U not have the entire WiiWare and VC library on its network? And if they dont how does one transfer their games from Wii to Wii U? is it on a flash drive, what about data that is not transferable to that? Im asking cause i really dont know.

Is the SS update really on the store? I have the game but i never reached the part where it became an issue. Fair enough on the apps, but wouldnt most people have that stuff by now? Wouldnt they just use it on another device?

WiiU does not have access directly to the tons of digital content originally on Wii. That still makes them money and they give Wii VC games away every month via Nintendo Club.

That shop won't close for a long while.

I believe you mean Wii U does have access to Wii Shop through the Wii Shop channel.

No. I meant what I said. WiiU does not have acces to Wii Shop content directly. You have to go through Wii mode to get to it. Thus, they won't be shutting off Wii's Shop any time soon.

well how is that really different in the long run?

Wut? One of my friends if goin' to be so mad for this...

I hope they release a updated version of the weather channel or wii u. I liked the music. :)

For Nintendo to be able to shut down the Wii Shop, they are going to need to transfer everything there over to the Wii U shop first.  It sounds easy, but there are some issues there.  Nintendo is in the process of making the VC games playable on the Wii U.  Right now they only run in Wii mode.  The emulators and games all need to be changed to run natively on the Wii U.  Then there is the question of what to do with the WiiWare games.  Those will probably only ever run in Wii mode, but maybe they can have their own section of the Wii U store.  I don't know how that will work though.

oh i know how hard it is, SOny just started putting PS1 classics on Vita and who knows how long it will take to get PS2 games there if at all. Im not holding this against Ninty at all I know its a hard process

Damn, that sucks. This is the kind of thing that worries me about digital distribution. When it is just a service, it can disappear at any time.

I am going to miss the Nintendo Channel the most. I liked the thing that kept a running track of all your playtime for your games.

It comes as no surpise now since all these channels are services are not present in the vWii inside the WiiU, although it did raise an eyebrow when you first booted the vWii and noticed how barebones it was.

I thought the news and forecast channel just took a third party feed? I used those two and the everybody votes channels from time to time.
