Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which console launch was handled worse, PS3 or Wii U?

Worse launch?

PS3 394 56.85%

Wii U 299 43.15%

Total:693

PS3 by far! SONY messed up so many things. too many to list in fact. releasing last whilst being $200-$300 more expensive than competition is the biggest mistake any company could make. im a launch owner, so i know how bad it was.

Definitely PS3. One of the worst launches ever. Sony was coming off an absolutely dominant generation with PS2 and botched it up to fall way behind. They sold the system at too high a price, lost over 50% of their market share, lost money on the system, lost most of their 3rd party exclusives. And as bad as Wii U has been selling, PS3 sold worse.

Wii U had a decent launch, but has flatlined brutally. But, it's still better off than the launch of either PS3 or XBox 360. At the rate it's currently trending it will fall to worse than those, but it also had two months without new games so it may pick up again with new titles. The real thing is with Wii U is that it's launch is more like 360. It's the first out of the gate, it's competing with cheaper last-gen systems and it has some growing pains to work out. But it's doing so before the competition launches, which is the key. PS3 was launching from behind from the get-go.

Saleswise it's WiiU obviously. Many ppl already posted that WiiU has the worst start of a console ever (I didn't double-check data, though).

Not necesserily, the first two months the console was out (Nov-Dec) it did fantastic, breaking records for console sales.

The sales for the console didn't start to get bad until January, where they are now abysmal.

I'm surprised how close the poll is given the replies in here. Seems we have a lot of vote & runners.

But yes, PS3. By a wide, wide margin.

For more than a month now the Wii U has been selling worse than the PS3 ever did, even before it launched in Europe.  As for Europe, the PS3 did more in two weeks in March than the Wii U has done in 13 weeks.  At its current rate it will take another 10 weeks to reach the PS3's two week sales.  In the US the PS3 will probably be ahead after four months when we get the February NPD numbers.  In Japan the Wii U is ahead overall, but it also took just 12 weeks to fall below 10k while the PS3 took 27 weeks.

Lol every commenter has said the PS3 had a worse start (a conclusion that I agree with) and yet the poll shows they are in the minority... Will some of those people who voted for the Wii U (that it had the worst start) please explain to us how the Wii U was worse?

Diehard PS fans admitting the truth about their favourite consoles rocky past? Not bloody likely lol

They vote WiiU because they have no other choice literally

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

From where I see it, the PS3 had a worse launch, but a better post-launch period. Using Metacritic as a flawed guide, we can see that the Wii U had 17 "Good" games in 2012, as opposed to the PS3's 12. That's an obvious difference. Even worse for the PS3 was that two of the Wii U titles were NintendoLand and NSMBU, both of which can be considered huge games.

However, going into 2007/2013, the PS3 got Sonic 06, Virtua FIghter 5, Tekken 5, Sports Games, Motorstorm, Virtua Tennis, Oblivion, and Splinter Cell. Not all of those games were good, but they were notable releases. The Wii U, in contrast, gets nothing until March, when it gets a late Spider-Man port, a Racing game, the ultimate edition of a Wii game, and one actual notable title likely to sell well. And going into mid-2007, the PS3 got MLB, The Darkness, Rainbow 6, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Super Stardust, Madden, and Warhawx. Once again, not a lot of exclusives, but there was support. The Wii U is getting 1st party titles and maybe The Wonderful 101.

Love and tolerate.

PS3 had an awful launch. WiiU can still improve.

I've said wii-u because it lacks an ability to stay on top. The PS3 was at least the strongest console this generation, and got things turned around.

The wii u launched with hardware that's not powerful enough. I could be wrong. All gets down to how people feel about PS4 and Xbox next gen.
