even though i did generalize in my previous post i shouldnt have, a mistake on my part. usually racing games dont need or require a story as the only thing your going to do is race and maybe adjust the car. its a genre that doenst require a story admittedly because the univerise or world isnt important, its all about the race, there are no characters or anything to tell a story. my point was about games where the univerise of the game is important, or when exploration a key element of the game

Hmm...you're narrowing down the scope of games that should have a story. First you implied all games should have a story, when you said developers who make games with "pure gameplay" are just hiding the fact that story isn't important. Then you said all games shouldn't have a story; just those with a world or universe. Now you're saying all games with a world or universe don't need a story; just those in certain genres.

You say "games where the universe of the game is important." I'm not sure what you mean by "universe" but if the universe if important, then that's probably because it's a vehicle used to tell the story. But there are plenty of games where it isn't about immersing yourself in the universe which are quite enjoyable. Still though, the universe is important in many games yet no story is required. Take Journey for example (this is based on what I've heard from the game; I haven't played it myself).

A great story is like an extra gas tank, you don't actually need it that much but if you have it you can go a lot further. Particularly to me, the story (and/or script) is the most important part of a videogame, a game that for me would be mediocre at best can instantly become a masterpiece (.hack//G.U. trilogy) and a game that could have been better becomes mediocre at best (Final Fantasy XIII) just because of the story.

So jumping on duck heads and eating mushrooms is the only way to have good gameplay now? Newsflash: what constitutes good game play is up to the player. QTEs are great to some people...more power to them. Those games are still games.

I'll take kz2's gameplay i.e just shooting stuff over jumping on ducks and potatoes anyday

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I definitely prefer a great story with ok gameplay to great gameplay with a bad story.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

there are very few games that don't have a story i can bear to play for more then a few minutes

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

it depends on expectation really. If a game is set for gameplay I.E sport, mobas etc then gameplay but if a game promotes itself as a strong story then I prefer stronger story over gameplay

hmm, most games i like are games known for gameplay and not story but i also love to the moon and something like the walking dead is awesome.

i think the reason why most games i like are gameplay driven and not story driven is because there are more games with good gameplay as games with good story. in reality i think i just like everything as long as it's good.

My point was that I really prefer gameplay. That's why, even for AA, which is pretty story-driven, the gameplay was hugely important for me. (Well, the courtroom parts. The investigation is a mundane hell that you have to survive to be rewarded in the courtroom.)

That's a good way to put it.

I say gameplay every time, usually story driven games are nothing but endless cut scenes and very little gameplay.

I think that every game is different when it comes to what makes the game good. I love endess ocean 2, but not for the story. Not really for the gameplay either. But because of the atmosphere and the world. It was a beautiful game, and it is truthfully something special. NSMBU Is a great example where gameplay is the thing that matters.
