Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why people hated Skyward Sword?

my main complaint with the game was the broken controls

seriously, every 3-6 minutes I would need to stop the game to recalibrate the wii motion plus because for whatever reason straight would now be waaay over to my right, or hell, all the way behind me. And this basically made it impossible to play the game because whenever I'd open the item inventory, i'd basically need to twist my arm completely around just to access my items (why the hell didn't they just make the item screen like all of the other screens, where it centers to wherever the motion plus is aimed when the menu opens?)

from what I read online these problems are because I have the original wii motion plus dongle add on, not built into the controller. Gee, thanks Nintendo

Oh and let's not forget 1.5 second lag to do a stab attack, that sure is convenient! Or half the time when I swing downwards it would still perform a vertical slash but it would be an upward slash instead... wtf?

And swimming... oh god... that's got to be the best possible example of unneccesary motion controls. Same with flying.

The more I think about it, the more I hate the controls -_-

At least diagonal and horizontal sword movements worked properly, assuming the dongle didn't need to be recalibrated again

Other complaints include:
-I thought the overworld was uninspired and boring.
-Less focus on the dungeons, and that dungeony feel, which I think Zelda is all about
-Hardly any heart pieces to collect! Wtf Nintendo, you start us with 6 hearts, make it so you only need 4 pieces to form a container, and get lazy on 2 of the containers by just making them inventory medals. Heart pieces are the, *ahem* heart of sidequesting in LoZ!
-Recycled bosses (you fight the Skeleton a couple times, and the pirate was basically a reskinned skeleton, then theres the imprisoned 3 times, they made some normal lizard enemies into a subboss, and you fight ghirahim what, 3 times? Also, Whoopi Goldb... I mean Tenatalus, looks completely retarded)
-No songs to play on your instrument.
-Fi sucked, especially compared to Midna or King of Red Lions or... Well Ok I didn't like Navi either
Didn't like fi because she felt so lifeless and why the hell does she spoil half of the game's puzzles?
-"Hey you got a bug" "Hey you got a blue rupee" "Hey you got a material", let's stop the game for 5 seconds to announce this! Did the developers think I'm an idiot? Like I don't realize I just picked up a jelly blob that I've gotten 50 times in the past?

Maybe I should buy a new wiimote plus and give it another chance. I'm sure it's not as bad as I'm remembering right now, I was probably just disappointed because of all of the pre-release hype

One, the story. It's badly paced, meandering for hours between plot-relevant events. The villain, Ghirahim, is toothless and unthreatening. Because Zelda is absent much of the plot, there is little sense of urgency. And it remains both poorly written and poorly plotted.

Two, the design. Skyward Sword had a dozen tiny design hiccups that should either have been removed or made optional. Things like skipping dialogue to the menu constantly opening when you get new items, and everything that Fi does.

Three, the repetition. The game will force you to repeat segments and backtrack to the same central-hub area numerous times. It forces bland, repeated boss fights on you. Most enemies require the same basic strategy to defeat, without deviation.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

I hate opening chests or finding items... I can't ficking stand how they made such a big deal out of everything you pick up! That stupid fuckng music "do do do dooo!". Just gimme the damn rupee and stfu

If I sound mad it's cause it really pisses me off. It should ONLY be a big deal when you find a triforce or equal value.

1) I also had the dongle add on and never had to re calibrate all the time.

2) This ones makes sense from a design stand point, the developers knew people will play the game with the TP motion control mindset (which is simple waggling all the time), and you can't do that in SS because you will get killed all the time, you need to do some precise slashes. So if the game only started with 3 hearts that would have caused a lot of frustration in some gamers at least until they learned how to use the controls. But yeah the 2 medals for the hearts is pretty stupid.

I loved it, and I thought the last boss fight was awesome!

Yeah. it is prolly the best boss fight in any Zelda game.

The game overall was a disappointment, lack of exploration, backtracking, the sky was empty, no day and night, handholding, Fi, long tutorial, combat was tedious.

That being said, it did a few things that I REALLY liked.
1. Ancient Cistern and Sandship are some of the greatest Zelda dungeons of all time. In fact, Ancient Cistern is my favorite, and Sandship is top 5-6.
2. Ghiriham was a interesting villain! For once a character that really interested me. too bad he was just a pawn. His fight's were challenging, and excellent. Some of my favorite boss fights.
3. Silent Realms are very tense, and fun. I enjoyed them.

Overall Skyward Sword is one of the weaker Zelda's, but parts if it are completely stellar. So it's not nearly as bad as TP, but not nearly as good as Wind Waker.

The Sandship is an amazing dungeon....until the boss. It looks like this but fat...

I don't know who you're listening to, but here's the thing:  there will ALWAYS be haters for anything for no apparent reason just because, well, they can.  No reason to pay attention to such people.

Personally, I think Skyward Sword is fantastic and definitely among the best.  The Wii+ controls took some getting used to, but otherwise it was everything I expected a Zelda game to be.

i liked skyward sword but i hated that it was more linear then any other zelda game

It did have a couple of great parts, the sand sea and time bubbles especially but overall it was a let down.

- Too much recycling of the environments, boss battles, backtracking.
- Empty disconnected overworld, nothing to explore.
- Fiddly controls, 1 out of 5 times it would mistake a vertical for a horizontal slash or slash on the back swing, stabs were even less consistent. The odd mix of 1:1 motion control and gesture based slashing/stabbing didn't really work.
- Unskippable cutscenes before boss battles. Reset after the cut scene or let me skip them.
- Fi, Oh you discoved a blue rupee, that's worth 5 rupees. That gets really annoying when you play the game for half an hour at the time. Don't explain everything again every time I start the game ugh.
- No camera control, I hate having to stop and go into first person mode to be able to look up.
