Lack of ads before it was released
Overall lack of info
Economic crysis

I have seen a shit load of Wii U ads (though they are only showing the same one time after time where I live). Unfortunately, it's beyond awful.

yeah no shit. Europeans need to step the fuck up. Its the only region with mediocre sales. Not horrible, just not launch/xmas style.

There we have (some of) it. They are not very interested in New Super Mario Bros. U and already have PS3/360/PC for third party titles, so they will wait for more exclusive system sellers.

yeah it just sold 6.36 million. they clearly are not interested in the game. you do notice it sold in EU more than japan right? and WiiU numbers in japan are higher than in EU. its not because of SMB

There is something to that argument.   Nintendo was never big in Europe (home console wise) before Wii.  It was Sega and then Sony in PAL regions.  They don't have the same nastalgic love for 2D Mario that NA/Japan has and this is the second helping of 2D Mario this year.     Same factor comes into play with NintendoLand.

A Wii Sports type launch title might have helped European sales (especially if it had football/cricket this time)

That sounds like a much better explanation.

I dont buy the economic crisis excuse

DS and Wii had record sales during the height of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009 (nintendo had record profits)...next excuse.

Also of note if the fiscal cliff doesn't get resolved, i guess we will be saying the same for the US since that will most certainly send our economy reeling.

Although to be fair back then, it was only just starting. Now we're deep in the recession.

Plus back then Greece, Spain, Italy weren't nearly bankrupt. And Germany & France wasn't bailing them out! Thats alot of countries and people with no money.

Its part of the reason to go with the other reasons mentioned by others.

The EU is to blame. I have no evidence to back up my claims though.
