Forums - Sony Discussion - Would Sony be fine with a $499 price tag on the Orbis?

It will be too risky imo. I don't see any console going for more than $450 (and I think that's pushing it a little). If Sony does launch at $500 it will definitely hurt them at the beginning.

They would need an absolute fucking BEAST of a lineup to do well, and other great incentives. With a $50-100 profit on each system maybe they'd make quite a lot of money, but what would probably happen is it'll have a small install base, making third parties less inclined to support it, less software sales... It won't be able to take the same liberties the PS3 took with price and support because the brand doesn't have that kind of power anymore.

And taking it out of its own bubble, Microsoft can afford to make a cheaper AND more powerful or similarly powerful console, and the Wii U will be almost 1/3 the price at times...

I think it would ultimately lead to the death of PS.

Sony needs to profit on the machine itself. I really don't understand the point in selling a machine for a loss to make it up with sales from games/online marketplaces. Profiting on both fronts sounds more appealing to me.

I would say $399.99 is pretty much the max they should be aiming to sell at launch for. Anything higher is really asking to much. Though I would buy it, I don't want to see another PS3 launch.

If people weren't idiots then it would be fine, but unfortunately they're willing to pay $600 for half-laptops that will be replaced in a year rather than pay $500 or $600 for a console that will be fully supported and improved for 6-8 years. Doesn't make sense to me but that's public perception for some reason.

I think PS4 will be $399 and the next Xbox will be $499 or $299 with a 2 year live contract. Microsoft will probably strongly market the $299 deal and most people will think its actually cheaper than PS4.

Depends on why you buy this laptop. If it is for gaming, yeah the thing will probably be bad from the very beginning, but if you buy a laptop for, let's say, just using the internet and run some school applications a laptop will probably satisfy your needs for a very long time.

Still people who buy tablets every year are because of consumerism, not because they really need it. He's also compering consoles to tablets/laptops which is kinda irrelevant because people do not buy those gadgets for gaming.

Sony can't charge more than what ever the Nextbox costs. The Playstation brand isn't what it used to be. The NextBox will launch first and set the standard. Since Sony can't afford to best MS Hardware this time, even to the marginal PS3/360 difference, I expect the PS4 to be priced less instead. Since I don't expect MS to price the NextBox above $400 I don't expect Sony to either.

NO!! ps3 didn't even start doing great until it hit $299

also the software wont sell too well at that price point. It will be another price point that gives The PS the image of not selling software. The games wont sell early on and then there will be even more companies recieving lay offs and going out of business

It needs to launch at $399

half a grand is just too much..
