Forums - Sales - If PS4 finally has cross game chat/party, PS4 wins next generation.

Needs more than that.

Needs good quality 3rd party games, not rubbish ports.
Needs good quality 1st party games from Day 1, no waiting 4 Years for your biggest game.
Needs to maintain free online gameplay... And advertise it.
Needs to be both powerful and affordable, without little gimmicks.

A headstart over the next Xbox would be pretty helpful, too.

lol, this.

i fully, 100% expect the psn service on the ps4 to finally get all those missing features in xbl and be a better service for it.  ...but do you actually believe MS is just going to sit still next gen?!?  i don't know what MS will bring with their next gen of live but i'm sure it will be something, it will be cool, and to some it will justify the $50 a year fee over playstation's free service.

Just close this thread right now. Utterly pointless.

Is cross-game chat really that big a deal? I personally don't see the appeal of this functionality.

It will have it, but even if it didn't it would still win next-gen if launched at a similar price and date.

I don't think that will push Sony over the top, but more importantly: why is cross-game chat so coveted?

Being able to communicate with friends and teammates playing the SAME game makes perfect sense. But why is it so important that I can chat with my friend while I play Halo 3 and he plays Crackdown? Shouldn't we be immersed in our games?

If it's just about a free way to chat with friends over long distances, there's always Skype.

because it makes it easier to get into the same game together in the first place.   text chat is very slow and cumbersome when you are trying to ask a friend if he/she wants to "....".

because social experiences are always more fun than non-social experiences.

because while a service like skype can work who want to use an additional phone/computer to run the service side by side.

trust me... the thing i miss most about WoW is vent.  the thing i wish for most in the ps4 is cross-game chat.

"only reason xbox360 is handedly outselling PS3 in the US is cross game chat"

Please give me a break. These are the reasons:

Kinect
Halo
App's
Best third party games
Live arcade

You're a fanboy.    But majority of casual american video games don't know that xbox has better 3rd party games.  For most, the differences are not noticeable unless you do research on lens of truth or digital foundry.  These are the same casual video gamers that make COD sell 10+ million on both consoles.  Amongst fanboys, COD has the most hate on the internet video game message boards, but most video gamers don't know this.

I wouldn't say live arcade is a big reason. PSN has some exclusive PSN games that are phenomenal like Journey.

App's.  I don't think this has any effect on console sales.  PSN has apps too.  And so does iPads.

I'll give you Kinect.  But this is mostly for family games.

I'll give you Halo.  PS3 has good exclusive but not as popular as this.  But I have faithful xbox live friends that bought PS3 just to play Uncharted and God of War.

It's not necessarily the "cross game" chat.  I don't usually chat when my friends are playing a different game.  But being able to chat and put a multiplayer/coop party together before starting a game is really helpful.

You get the occasional party/internet disruption, and xbox makes it easier to get back into the party.  PS3 is much more difficult.  It's so much easier to drop in and out of coop parties on xbox.

The only reason xbox360 is handedly outselling PS3 in the US is cross game chat.  PS3 is outselling xbox360 everywhere else but still lag in global sales because xbox360 almost outsell PS3 2 to 1 in the US.

You could argue most of the 3rd party game are better on xbox 360, but I think this matters very little to majority of American video gamers (wal-mart shoppers, COD players, significant others gift shoppers, non-fanboys) and they don't even know which games perform better on which platform.  All my friends on xbox live only get all games (especially) multiplayer on xbox live because party system is so difficult on PSN.  Everything else (netflix app, bing, etc) doesn't factor much into buying a console.

If PS4 can even the playing field by inclusion of cross game chat/party, why pay to play online?

No!

What matters is that Xbox 360 came first, so more people had Live to begin with, so when people bought their consoles they got an Xbox because then they could play CoD and Halo online together (or FIFA in Europe)
