First the Wii U's chat, then no ethernet port and now this...man the bad things are stacking up.

What's wrong with WiiU Chat?

I'm still confused by this. What do they mean updates? Do they mean the updates that require to be activated when you first insert the disc? Because if that's the case, then doesn't the the wii disc already have the update in it (it just needs to be activated).

I'm pretty sure that's just it since the wii u has the wii hardware in it to even have backwards compatibility. I thought this was a non issue for wii owners who didn't/don't have internet.

Online patches, I think. Unless the OS was ready around the time the first games left the presses. Otherwise, you'll need to wait for the second wave of games to get these features without using an internet connection.

Perhaps the update will also come on new wii games or wiiU games. Ps3 and xbox 360 both have updates that are on disc so need to be connected to the internet

I honestly can't think of any game that requires an online patch since "The Offical Nintendo Seal," despite its claim dwindling over the years still holds up compared to a lot of the 360's and PS3's games (ahem games like Skyrim).

@everyone saying anti-piracy: Why do you say that? I don't see the connection.

Usually Nintendo introduces anti-piracy logic in its updates. But I'm not sure that makes any sense when no hacks have been made at this point in time (that I know of).

This is nothing. Just wait 'til they announce that you need an update to use a wireless connection.

I think all the Wii U games won't need this update to play (that would be...unwise), just Wii games. I still think it's weird, and I don't understand, on a technical basis, how this would promote anti-piracy (unless it's to make sure any Wii exploits can't be used on the new system?), but it shouldn't impact too many people. I think.

Edit: "I think all the Wii U games won't need this update to play"? Da fuq am I even saying there? Is English really my first language? o_O

yup you will also need an upgrade to use your buttons on the gamepad

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/08/wii-u-needs-update-to-play-wii-games

Earlier this week we brought you news that Wii U will have a 'day one' update that will enable a variety of functionality, including Miiverse, TVii and Wii U Chat. There is one critical extra element that is apparently coming in this update - Wii functionality. What we have is a retail Wii U unit - the very same system you will buy next week. When we insert a Wii disc to play, the system notifies us that an update is necessary to play the game. The same applies to the Wii to Wii U data transfer, which we detailed to you yesterday.

Just as we mentioned before, we don't have further information on the update itself, only that it will be available when the system launches. We are anticipating being able to access this update prior to the launch, and with any luck will be able to bring you more details on key online and Wii-related operations. We've also reached out to Nintendo for more information, and to see if there will be an update method for those gamers without an Internet connection, particularly in light of this backwards compatibility functionality.

What the hell, Nintendo? You didn't put an ethernet port in the damned peice of crap, so how on Earth am I supposed to download this stupid patch? What happens if I buy  a Wii U just to play Wii games? Cheapskates screwing us over again.

Seriously, I'm a bit confused. I thought the system was using hardware to run Wii games, and not just software emulation?

Ever heard of wifi?  The Wii does software updates with no ethernet cable plugged into it.  My XBox 360 is also wifi, so no cable plugged in there either.  I'm not understanding where this is an issue.

just a guess but wii was exploitable through some wii games (ex. twilight hack) so keeping the wii part of the wii u separate could likely prevent the use of those hacks on the wii u. Having to download it afterwards could also free up space for people who don't want to use their wii u as a wii and also allow nintendo more time to perfect it after production has started.

Either way, not a big deal
