Iwata accepts blame for Nintendo 3DS, takes 50% pay cut

The Nintendo president accepts responsibility for the 3DS not doing as well as Nintendo would have hoped.

Speaking to shareholders today in Tokyo, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata accepted responsibility for the 3DS 'failure', and revealed that he'd be taking a 50 per cent cut in pay.

"For cuts in fixed salaries, I'm taking a fifty percent cut, other representative directors are taking a 30 percent cut, and other execs are taking a 20 percent cut," Iwata explained.

This follows the news that Nintendo has reduced its expected profits for the fiscal year by a staggering 81.8 per cent, and that the 3DS will be getting price cuts across all regions. An exact price has yet to be settled on for the UK, but the price will drop from $249.99 to $169.99 in the US. This will come into effect from August 12.

According to Kotaku, Iwata currently brings home an annual salary equivalent to $2 million. In contrast, Shigeru Miyamoto earns around $1.2 million.

"As for other Japanese exporters, the strength of the yen weighs on Sony’s results. The currency has become a safe-haven destination for many investors as debt concerns undermine confidence in both the euro and the dollar."

Haha, Japan has more debts per inhabitant and per GDP than all other industrial countries. But ironically it's currency is safe.

Anyways, on-topic ... this are baby-steps in the direction to reality.

I think 'trending behind' is putting things lightly.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

This comment reflects the decision to not cut the PSV's price.

How come?

And how do you determine they won't cut the Vita's price?

I firmly believe they will cut within a few weeks along with a PS3 price cut.

If they were going to cut the price, chances are they wouldn't of aknowledged the poor sales until they did.

Weird too is that 3DS was selling better then Vita is now and at the same price point. Nintendo just known that those numbers weren't good. Where as Sony is ignoring the fact it isn't selling well.

Could you elaborate?

I meant up until now. I expected a price cut between E3 and TGS, but rather sooner than later.

It's still possible that they will cut the price this year, but they also may just go with throwing in a free game with a PSV purchase. Which is basically how their current plan looks like. I think all those upcoming bundles go for $250.

Okay, I understand.

Speaking of TGS, has a company ever announced a price cut at TGS?

Usually price cuts are announced in June-August.

Not that I know of, but struggling systems can easily deviate from the norm, because something has to be done.

Well, I can't think of any also, but I don't think it would be strange.

But this year is almost guaranteed to happen... not for Vita but that new PS3 has to show up on some occasion. Hmm, not exactly a price cut... but sorta
