Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Answers Burning Wii U Questions

Why show two colours if they havent decided yet? Anyone smell the possibility of 2 models ie Wii U and Wii U Elite?

Well, I recall seeing a silver and white PS3 during its launch, but we never got those :(. But that's Sony and this is Nintendo... just thought I'd bring it up. They released a black Wii late into its life cycle so I have no doubts that they have plans of releasing a black version later down the line. Maybe there is a certain timing for releasing these things. Don't be surprised if there is only a white version at launch.

What do you mean by Wii U and Wii U Elite? One's cheaper and the other is more expensive?

So i guess many people wont be buying a wii u unless every single AAA game it will ever have is released right at launch!

This annoys me.  If you are just tapping the trouch screen like a button then it's just another button not a U-nique experience.  Also, who the hell does multi-touch on tablets with one finger from each hand.  two fingers -- one hand.

It really is just a cleverly disguised excuse. At least it will help to make the GamePads more affordable... hopefully, which I'm sure was a strong reason for Nintendo to opt for single-touch.

I think the real reason is, that they want to make it possible to use a pen to draw on the pad.

Nintendo copied Xbox??? You got to be kidding. Microsoft has never invented a single thing in their veracious raping of the technology industry. Sony is next in the long line of companies driven into bankruptcy so they can line their already obscene bank accounts.

I know you are joking but the Vita wants a word with you.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

No unified achievement system? O_o

To make it worse they aren't even making it a company wide mandate to include it in Nintendo games either? O_o

Reggie talks as if he knows best which way we want to use a tablet, so now we only get single touch? O_o

Well, that there definitely hurts plans for wide spread support for tablet specific games on the WiiU shop. Better of making them for the Vita or better yet, smartphones...

It's a gamepad with single touch screen, not a tablet. It's been said beforebut i will repeat it, the gamepad has sticks and buttons O_o

What's a Vita? just sayin...

Did we ever heard of price, consumer friendly pricing or failing console-launches with 599$, or 249$ handhelds ?

And a console packed with touchscreen-gamepad should be a powerhouse, multi-touch and for 299$?

It's no rocket sciene, is it?

#1.) Yes, I know what it is, but the point I am making is that if they want serious WiiU shop support for the controller they should have at the least had it able to support what other touch devices were able to support the last 4-5+ years.

#2.) Vita is a Sony handheld with the same setup as the WiiU tablet, only with a back touch rather than the R2 and L2 triggers. It's screen has support for multitouch of (From what I have tested) ~6-8 fingers at a time, although (2) is what is required for the most part. The back touch panel supports the same.

As for the rest of your post, No, nobody said it is rocket science, but if you are going to release a tablet that won't even be able to share content that the smartphones, Vita, tablets all share, what makes you think devs will drop all else and give their focus to the WiiU? Even more so since you are outright admitting that it is a step back in that regard.

You also act like adding a multitouch screen would have added another $50 to the price tag of the console considering the estimated BOM for the Vita was $50 total for (2) touch screens, one of which has no display and the other which is a higher resolution than the one on the WiiU. We all know it is single touch only because they are being cheap. Both of which are also 5", just like the one on the WiiU controller tablet.

No offense to anyone here, but maybe I just have higher standards when I realize we are living in 2012 and not 2004.

Now don't get me wrong, I will be getting a WiiU someday, just not until it gets proper updates. One of which being mandated achievements so that they catch up with the rest of the world.

System-Level Achievements

Some of Nintendo's top game designers don't want to put Achievements in their games, but Nintendo has put an Achievement-like system in the 3DS, mostly to reward people for feats involving the system's Street Pass networking system. In other words, the system itself has Achievements. "We will have that," Fils-Aime said. "Once you start getting into game-specific [Achievements] that's developer driven." Microsoft may require every game to have Achievements, but, Fils-Aime said, "That is not our philosophy."

Those Notorious Friend Codes

First the bad news… maybe. Nintendo has not chucked the idea of requiring people to have friend codes, which, on the Wii, were 16-digit codes that people had to exchange before being linked as friends on the system.

And now the better news… "There are friend codes, but it's not the existing friend code system," Fils-Aime said. "What do I mean by that? Here's what I mean: you will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population. The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes." (He declined to lay out the new Wii U friend code program just yet.)

The problem I believe people had with the Wii version, I told Fils-Aime, is that adults who owned the system felt like, hey, if I'm an adult, treat me like an adult and let me friend people I've met online without having to call a person and exchange a code or something like that. "Agreed," Fils-Aime said.

"You feel like those people will be happier?" I asked.

"Yes, they will be."

So no achievements and the return of friend codes. If this is true then me and many others will be saving a lot of money this holiday by passing on this "next gen" system that can't even get basic last gen features right.

Why bring friend codes back at all? They served no purpose aside from making it much harder to connect to friends. Achievments are also a big part of games now with their own communities built around them, and it seems Nintendo doesn't care about that at all. 3DS achievments and game specific achievements are lame because there is no tracking of all the progress one has made in terms of game playing ... this kills the meta game feel of achievements.

These two things alone are enough to make me not buy a Wii U. I really have no idea how they could screw this up so bad.

The Miiverse demo from the Nintendo Direct seemed to indicate that some form of achievements will be there, at least partially integrated with the Miiverse system which will, in turn, be unified across games.

Not making it mandatory is the smart thing.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

They should have made the achievement system mandatory.

How is it smart to not make it mandatory? Is it really that tough for Nintendo to do what everyone else has been mandated to do since 2009?

I am pretty sure it's not that tough, plus, considering how popular achievements and trophies are, choosing the path they did already knocks out potential sales.

Making it non-mandatory however... I fail to see how that benefits Nintendo.

My two burning questions-

Will Nintendo ever release proper system specifications?

Can developers make games that only require use of the pro controller and thus freeing up precious system resources?
