Yep. And it is one, 70 million sold units is very respectable.

Then you are reading them wrong. What those graphs should tell you is that the 3DS did badly and the PSV is doing terribly.

PSP sales were good, but not beastly.

Essentially this ...

The DS and PSP (essentially) tied in the first year of sales with moderate/respectable sales; and, after that, the DS' sales exploded while the PSP continued to chug along at a moderate/respectable pace.

The odd thing is that many of the complaints about the PSP early on could be said about the PS-Vita; and it seems like Sony did not learn their lessons. The primary one I am thinking of was how many people said they didn't want to play home console games on the go, and the saving grace of the PSP was it was easily hacked and people could play emulated SNES games. The PS-Vita is even more of a home console gaming experience on the go, and it isn't hacked and there are many other platforms that people already carry that can play SNES (or SNES like) games.

Assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups. And even if accurate, is this bad news or something? It was well done by MS.

This gen is over as soon as the next gen starts, so 7 months from this point on. It might be over by now already if you see the decreasing interests in this generation. You should have been here in 2008, every week was a shitstorm about new numbers. Anyway, otherwise the PS2 generation is not even finished till 2015 and the SNES generation was still going in 2003, while the PSOne generation was still going when the PS3 released.

I am not saying the PS5 will be available in 6-7 years, but it will 'come up' - rumors etc. Just like Xbox 3 and PS4 are 'coming up' right now.

I don't know how we got here, but fact is that sony shoudl rethink their strategy. They really don't need a financial nightmare like the PS3 all over again.

and you used the Vita to illustrate that point, only the Vita is not a financial nightmare which is my point

I say wait and see. With sales like these, the 3rd party support might struggle. The R&D for the vita and the biggest marketing campaign Sony ever did need to be recouped first. I think the pricepoint is too high. They saw the 3DS struggle at this price, why would it work with the PS Vita? They have to cut the price to get at least some market share, which will kill their profits.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Sony needs to have a price cut, and not because Nintendo has done it with the 3DS.

What this shows me is that the 3DS started off very slowly, and the Vita is starting off even slower.

Still don't get why people were predicting it'd outsell the 3DS by a huge margin.

I remember the lack of two analogs was the largest criticism. As for console gaming on the go, I hate that arguement and it makes little sense.

First, the PSP didn't really offer console like experience because of the lack of controls. Plenty of games were forced to adhere to control schemes or gameplay mechanics that were nothing like their console counterparts, i.e. Killzone liberation was a top down shooter.

Second, every game is console style gaming, every hand held has a comparable past console counterpart it can be compared to. PSV - PS3, PSP - PS2, both 3DS and the DS launched with Nintendo 64 games on them and the 3DS is graphically comparable to Wii and Gamecube. This arguement is fake and only used as an attack on Sony's introduction to the handheld market and their advertisment for it. It's a straw man arguement, don't use again please, even to make a point or reference to the concept.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Gilgamesh, only one month ago.

lmao good luck with that one.

while I personally think the it has a chance to outsell the psp, it's just not positioned in the market to attract the casuals (children mostly) needed to make it sell more than the 3ds, barring the 3ds tanking for no good reason

A large number of people. Gilgamesh created a thread about it, for example, and a lot of people supported it, especially after the 3DS had its slow start. Don't see too many like that nowadays though

Terrible sales.

PSV needs:

- games
- bundles with games
- including a memory card with each unit
- colours
- better marketing

and if all of the above isn't enough yet, as a last option

- a price cut

As Sony can do time limited special offers for Easter and Golden Week, a definitive cut, if necessary, can be postponed to after Golden Week. But the other things, particularly games, are needed ASAP.
