The DS and PSP (essentially) tied in the first year of sales with moderate/respectable sales; and, after that, the DS' sales exploded while the PSP continued to chug along at a moderate/respectable pace.
The odd thing is that many of the complaints about the PSP early on could be said about the PS-Vita; and it seems like Sony did not learn their lessons. The primary one I am thinking of was how many people said they didn't want to play home console games on the go, and the saving grace of the PSP was it was easily hacked and people could play emulated SNES games. The PS-Vita is even more of a home console gaming experience on the go, and it isn't hacked and there are many other platforms that people already carry that can play SNES (or SNES like) games.
