Forums - PC Discussion - Will PC gaming ever become bigger then console?

@Play4Fun,

The next gen console controllers won't lose out much if they fail to design a good control scheme for RTS in my opinion.

However the next gen console controllers and their touchscreens/touchpads will have to capitalize on the fastest expanding genre in recent years known as MOBA or multiplayer online battle arena (DOTA,LOL,HON)as this new genre could even make RTS look like an unpopular niche genre.

I certainly hope not. The PC, in my opinion, is good for flash games and a few "actual" games here and there. Not console gaming.

I think PC gaming = crappy indie games. I doubt PC will overtake the console market for gaming any time soon. I'm almost sure more software will be sold for PC eventually, but i doubt it will be used as much as a dedicated game console.

this is... just...

i just... uh....

I know what you mean. The amount of ignorance on the topic of PC gaming in this thread is simply astounding.

I've played RTS games before. It is not a requirement to be pressing 100+ actions per minute. Maybe you are talking about some subset of hardcore RTS gamers who play competitively or something.

An RTS that is built up  (Pikmin 3 for example) or properly ported to take advantage of the controller's features would play awesomely.

Sure PC will still have it's advantages with all those keys and stuff but I think the controller has  some unique possibilities  in its' own right such as, say, a game where you play with an RTS view on the controller and build up an empire, gather resources, etc while on the TV screen you can battle/explore in full third person view.

RTS games will still be far far better on PC, if you hve to dumb down the game for the Wii U then it's not as good for those types of games now is it? Competitive RTS is a pretty big thing BTW in fact competitive high speed RTS like Starcraft is far bigger than the dumbed down RTS games like DoW II.

I didn't say dumbed down, did I now? I said made to take advantage of the controller. The touch screen + stylus/fingers + controller features + two different screens to play with gives alot of head room for RTS games.

Like I said, PC will still have its' advantages thanks to all those keyboard keys and mouse, but that set-up has its' own unique advantages as well.

And stop telling me about high speed RTS. We both now most RTS gamers on PC don't play by pressing 100 - 300 keys per minute (can you even do it?). That's mostly  hardcore professional Koreans who play competitively for money and a few guys from other countries. Hardly representative of the rest of the market. Last time I checked people don't need to play like the pros to have fun playing an RTS game.

People need good controls to have fun playing an RTS game though.

I don't get why you are pushing the Wii U controller for RTS games anyway. It's inferior to what could be pulled off with the IR Pointer of the Wiimote, because that controller is far closer to a mouse than a touchscreen.

Micro management and commands can be done much better on the Wii U controller than with the wii mote.

Pikmin 3 wasn't moved to WIi U for just HD graphics.

I'd like to hear how an RTS game on Wii U is supposed to control like.

*Sigh*

ROl always has to make everything dififcult...

Okay so:

.You select units/groups and give comands with a top-down view on the touch screen. The fighting  happens close up on the big screen.

.Using the circle pads you can zoom/look at the battles from all sides on the TV screen.

. Buttons on the controller can be used for certain hotkeys, like rallying and dispatching of troops.

Not sure what relevance the accelometer, gyroscope, microphone (voice commands?) and camera have for RTS games. Maybe we will see with Pikmin 3.

Maybe they could do  Co-op where a person with the Wii U controller does all the above while a person using the wiimote + nunchuk plays as infantry/vehicle in 1st/3rd person mode . Or better co op/competitive play if two Wii U controllers are possible.

Sounds very impractical. The TV screen would basically be meaningless, because you need to stay focused on the touch screen to give commands. Not to mention that the touch screen method would be considerably slower than a Wiimote.

What next? Are you going to tell me that a 3D platformer is best played with keyboard only controls?

The screened Wii U controller is a faster and more accurate option for selecting units and giving commands than Wii mote is. Let it go, ROL. Miyamoto agrees with me on that point so automatic win for me.

Miyamoto > ROL

Anyways, how does the TV screen become meaningless?

The Upad's touchscreen is used for selecting and commanding your units just like any other controller, just more interactively.

The TV screen provides real-time view of all the other activities going on and other gameplay info.

What are your thoughts, can PC gaming become bigger then console gaming one time in the future?

Well, PC gaming is already beyond Console gaming. *Nitpicking*

But as for Retailgames (and not those "abuse your friends" games on Facebook) .. hard to tell, if you look at Minecraft, it sold a heckload of Copy's for example... but i think we all can say 1 thing for sure: PC Gaming is anything but dead, its just that the audience is split into awfully many (but smaller) Categories, making it impossible to sell a Single title as Call of Duty does on PS3 alone (leave alone 360), but PC is the Section with the most income overall, if you count everything that calls itself "a game".

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Just because you say something doesn't make it true. A touchscreen cannot be faster and more accurate than a Wiimote, in fact it is neither. The Trauma Center series makes for a pretty good case, it plays like 10 times better on the Wii and that's probably an understatement.

Bolded the answer to your TV screen question.

Answer to the bolded: It's called multi-tasking.

Anyways, I will leave this for when Pikmin 3 is shown. You can expect me to spam your profile page with comments of ownage when that time comes.

And by take advantage of the controller you mean simplified controls, slower gameplay etc aka dumbed down

You can design an RTS arround a gamepad as well, and if you do you get a dumbed down RTS like Halo wars. Slow passed, limited numbers of units, no micro etc.

A touch screen is a lot better but it still has many limitations, especially a resistive one, you can only input one type of input through the screen at a time, you have to block your full view with your arm, you need to be looking at it any time you  input a command etc. Even on a simple PC RTS it uses 2 button mouse control for selection and moving. Then you have up to 10 control groups and then hotkeys for commands like attack move, hold ground, move without attack etc and then 0-4 hotkeys for unit abillities, keys for camera control + the ability to scroll arround the map by moving the pointer to the side of the screen.

Now on the U tab if you are holding a stylus in one hand you have access to the aquivelent of a one button mouse, 5 buttons and one control nub. Already you have lost 80% of the standard RTS control range. What does that mean? well now you ether have to bumb down the game by reducing gameplay speed, unit count, abilities, marginalise micro etc (dumb it down). Now we get to the issue with the two screens, if you are inputting all your controls on the tablet and nost of them have no tactile feedback theen you have to be looking down any time you want to input a command, trouble is in any PC RTS you are constantly giving commands while also being aware of the map. If you can't do these things the game has to be dumbed down for you to be able to have the time to look at the TV. So now you have a map where you select units and give controls.

As for my RPM it is usally arround 20-25 getting up past 40 during battles, but I suck. I am in the bottom 10% of RTS players.

So in closing your argument that the Wii U will take the RTS market away from PC is assinine, it will howver bring a new generation of console RTSs which should hopefully get more people into the genre and some of them may move on to PC RTS games. So it's a win win for everybody.
