Forums - PC - Will PC gaming ever become bigger then console?

Never. People don't want to spend $700+ bulding a gaming computer. When you buy a console you know that every game you buy for it will run just fine, unless the game itself sucks; however, when you buy a game for the PC, there is always that uncertainty that the game won't run (unless you have a mega rig). You also have to update your PC every few months or so because of how fast PC graphics cards go out of date. I am a noob when it comes to the PC, but this is all stuff that is a pain and that console owners don't have to go through.

I don't think so. First of all, a good gaming PC that is totally better than a console is about 1000$, whereas a console is sub 300$. Piracy is rampant on the PC, and is one of the major reasons for the lack of sales/revenue and lack of support compared to the consoles counterpart. Also, console gaming is way more family friendly than a PC and consoles make for a great system in living rooms. To sum it up, PC gaming won't be as popular as console gaming, in my opinion but it will still exist and will still have a fanbase to support it.

It's hard to tell what the future will bring, wether we see PC's or consoles as we do now. But as they are right now, PC's will never outgrow consoles. While consoles have to sacrifice the ability to be upgraded and modified, they are far more convenient than PC's and it's that convenience that has kept consoles ahead of PC's all these years. Tbh, PC's had their chance to dominate at one time. In the small window between 1983 and 1985 when the industry crashed, most people at the time thought that any future for gaming would on the PC. But they blew it and they've never had another chance like that since.

NVIDIA think so lol

Given that the fastest growing market (China) are currently dominated by some form of PC gaming it could happen, as long is you include web bassed gaming portals as PC gaming anyway. China's online gaming market (MMO, F2P and web) grew from $1.6 billion in 2007 to $3 billion in 2010 ($USD). It also depends if you count tablets as PCs I guess as that is a rapidly increasing market and with Windows 8 being designed to run on tablets and desktops it is pretty easy to argue that they are infact PCs.

Did Patcher make this graph?

Yay!!!

no. will iOS iPad gaming be bigger? yes

PC gaming IS bigger than consoles. It's just not the games that console gamers are wont to play. You look at the gaming stats from surveys and it's the oldy but goody games like Spider solitare and hearts that millions upon million of people play every day, day in day out.

My mother (73 years old) probably does more PC gaming than I do console gaming.

It's a somewhat false dichotomy to categorise PC gamers into 2 distinct groups: the facebook / solitare gamer vs. the action/adventure/RPG/FPSetc gamer. If you spend a lot of time on the PC playing games then you're a PC gamer, doesn't matter tha game. I find there to be a massive hypocrisy on the part of the Solitare / Facebook gamers when it comes to their attitude to the "other" i.e. my class of gamer. My sister-in-law is scathing about the console gaming her son does (and me of course), when she spends almost as much time on her Facebook games, possibly more, given she can Facebook game at work. She really needs to recognise that gaming is as big a part of her leisure time and stop being judgemental about the type of gaming my nephew and I do, simply because we like blowing stuff up, shooting people in the face and laying the smackdown on our enemies.

PC gaming will always be bigger than console gaming.

If you're talking about flash browser apps, F2P mmorpgs and 99 cents/1dollar software app games, then YES PC GAMING IS DEFNITELY BIGGER.

You don't have to wait for the future, it already is bigger than the console market by many times in the 3 genres that I mentioned.

All thanks to China, South East Asia and the Asia Pacific region.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

PC gaming is almost always bigger than the best selling console taken singularly, although it's normally smaller than the whole console market, except when the slowest cyclic periods of the latter don't coincide with the slowest PC ones.
About price for a gaming PC, it constantly gets lower, the overprice to make a work one become a gaming one is getting lower too, avoiding highest end GPUs it's already cheaper than most consoles, and after the first purchase a PC can be periodically updated for a fraction of its initial price.
About expansion of PC and competition from tablets and phones: China, India and other rapidly developing countries could make PC market even huger than now, and Android could end up unifying PC market with the mobile one.

If you count facebook games and web-based games it may in terms of revenue.

Probably not for bigger budget games though.
