The next gen console controllers won't lose out much if they fail to design a good control scheme for RTS in my opinion.
However the next gen console controllers and their touchscreens/touchpads will have to capitalize on the fastest expanding genre in recent years known as MOBA or multiplayer online battle arena (DOTA,LOL,HON)as this new genre could even make RTS look like an unpopular niche genre.
