Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pachter: "Wii U won't save Nintendo, phones took 35% of the market"

This guy don't need to go to school. He's so stupid I think lessons could be unuseful for him.

he still goes on about the Wii U launching too late and that they should have come out with an HD Wii years ago just because he predicted they would. get over it pachter. his and meteorologists jobs are the only ones that can be wrong half the time and still have them.

How can people say that with straight face after 2011 Wii sales and first weeks of 2012 ?

Because there's no software to move hardware in the last year and Nintendo is focusing in Wii U which will be released this year? Also, Pachter was predicting for 2009/2010 the Wii HD, when Wii sales were still good.

I still don't get why Pach was so adamant about Nintendo releasing a "Wii HD".. why? What would the purpose have been? To play games that are already visually barebones like the Wii (insert theme here) games, and to split the userbase between HD and non-HD games? Like say Wii HD came out by 2010 as he predicted.. .so games like Galaxy 2 and DKC Returns would have ONLY been for the Wii HD and not for the millions of people who owned just a plain vanilla Wii? That's ridiculous!

Michael Pachter cannot be this stupid. I have recently decided he is not a moron he can't be. Fact is Michael has something against Nintendo I do not know why. I could guess he takes bribes I could guess they didn't give him info he wanted. I don't know what Nintendo did to him or didn't do.

But his predictions show he is highly biased and he is purposely misleading investors. The question is why?

Calling those who disagree with him uneducated is hilarious. Ya ya Pachter we all know you have a great education and we do not for the most part. But when your predictions and logic lack common sense education does not matter.

The one thing I agree with is Microsoft is best set for a new generation. The American economies collapse gives them a huge advantage. Microsoft can begin shifting more manufacturing in the US take advantage of Obama and the US governments efforts to give American companies an edge. So Microsoft can make their systems cheaper and they will get tons of help selling it in the US. While the rising yen will make it more and more difficult for Japanese game companies to compete. Japanese systems will become more expensive as time goes on while Microsoft will be able to keep costs lower. The US being the largest market Microsoft will have a massive advantage.

But Pachter seems to be thinking highly optimistically. He has talked about how companies would be foolish to launch their hardware in the current economic conditions globally. lol either Mr.Pachter knows something our Governments don't or he's out of his mind.

Bank of Canada has stated America will never recover financially and the global economy is never going to be the same. Most Governments have forecast the global economy worsening over the next while. While many are even more pessimistic suggesting that the global economy will only continue to collapse over the next 50 years.

Mr.Pachter should a company wait for the economy to improve when almost every government is saying the global economy will never be the same. Or is it bright to get your hardware on the market as fast as possible? If companies can get enough hardware out as the economy worsens they can make money on software.

I would say less graphical power is smart as well. As finances get worse and worse developers will take fewer risks and spend less.

By the way yes Pachter did say Nintendo should launch WiiHD. Pachter is a social digital whore. He is promoting the industry in a major way sometimes logically other times not.

If Nintendo launches at 399$ with sufficient software and a large enough ad campaign it will be a success. 3DS will continue to sell well for another year assuming no major economic collapse occurs prior to Christmas 2012. 2012 is likely the latest any of the three should launch. 2013 is pushing it as resources globally run out as the economy shifts drastically entertainment products like games will struggle to maintain growth.

Of course the entertainment industry has often been sheltered. People would get rid of a lot but entertainment is extremely important. But this is why piracy is so important. As people begin to struggle it is now easier then ever to simply steal the entertainment. In our past economic crisis you couldn't just steal your movies and games.

Nintendo is the second best positioned to launch next generation! Nintendo will succeed this generation though I still think Nintendo will take a loss initially on WiiU and it might not meet Wii's initial sales. However I have a lot of faith that in the long run Nintendo will be better off then they were during the GameCube generation and between it an the last generation.

Michael Pachter works as an analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities. With how often his "anaysis" is wrong, and the fact that Wedbush Morgan Securities hasn't fired him due to incompetence, it can be safely assumed that he is saying what he is saying because it suits the needs of Wedbush Morgan Securities. While it is unlikely that he is part of a traditional Short and Distort scam, what he is involved in may not be substantially different ...

I like Pachter, whether he's predicting against or for Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. I always find people that say he's an idiot when he talks about the market/economy quite interesting. However, the worst part is all the people who get so fired up about his predictions. Who cares? Really. Is it really such a big deal that every single time people blow up like he slandered your mother? I thought the freak-out-over-Pachter's-comments thing would've died out a long time ago.

Much love Pach!

He predicted it even before that.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/pachter-predicts-hd-wii/

Here he is in mid 2007(!), predicting a Wii HD in 2009 or 2010.

While searching for that I also found another article where the asshole called WiiU a Wii HD, said that he was right, and that Ninendo should have released it sooner.

3DS - Star Fox 64 3D (2011)
3DS - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Trilogy) (2005/2014)
Wii U - Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (2010/2017)
Mobile - The Simpson's Tapped Out and Yugioh Duel Links
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)

TLDR

But based on the thread title, my response would be that phones and home consoles aren't the same market. Does pachter really think phones and home consoles are competing for sales? Because they really aren't. I don't even think that phones and handhelds compete, there may be some overlap but they aren't really direct competition.

No need to respond to the lunatic. Whatever negatives pachter says about nintendo has always meant
good fortunes for them which make me believe the future is definately bright for nintendo

Well, to be fair, he is right about Nintendo's stock and their losses.

He called recently the Wii as a "fad", and becuase of that and Kinect its sales were declining fast. The same with smartphones and tablets against dedicated portable gaming. The point I believe he's forgetting, is that Kinect and smartphones/tablets can be fads as the Wii and many other thousand of things before in this world.

Kinect maybe, but smartphones I don't think so, people are morte and more gonna see mobile phones as a need rather than a luxury, and more and more they are going to see smartphones as also a need, or at least a justifiable upgrade on what is already a needful item. Xbox and Kinect will bever be viewed by the "casual" audience as a need; only gamer geeks think their console is a need.

I disagree with is comment that dedicated HH gamers will / have migrated to smartphones / tablets. Maybe he's using dedicated in a different context to what I'm thinking but I think the casual gamer (i.e. those who are happy with angry birds and cut the rope asa the extent of sophistication in gaming they are happy with) is for sure mostly lost to 3DS and Vita. No way the casual HH gamer makes up 1/2 of DS's market. But you can bet all the ladies Olivia Newton-John was advertising to with the DS have moved on and won;t be buying a 3DS. So I think perhaps 1/4 to 1/3 of the DS market is lost to the 3DS.

I think Nintendo are really missing a market here. They should take a leaf deom Apple's book. Apple was NOT a phone company, but they had a decent fanbase through first the computers then the iPods. Nintendo should make their own phone. Pair up with RIM so that they don't occupy the same OS as Sony (Android) and put out a DSphone.

I know all y'all DS fans would buy, don't try to tell me otherwise.

I don't think many people have gone from Wii to smartphone or tablet. Totally different reasons behind getting a Wii and a compelling Wii U experience will bring them back to the console in front of the TV. I think Wii U has lost some market share to Kinect and Nextbox+Kinect though. It seems pretty clear that about 250 million is the upper limit for number of consoles likely to be sold this generation. This gen could be the peak gen for consoles and the limit next gen might be 200 million. That's still plenty of console sales for each of the players to maintain a credible install base. I think it will be closer to evenly shared next gen with about 70 million each. But if MS and Sony get their "media hub" concept and marketing right then the console market potential could grow next gen. However if Nintendo keep their reputation as only a box for playing games then they may not be well positioned for those who are looking for more than just a console to attach to their TV.

Pairing up with RIM would be a ridiculously bad idea. Not only are the demographics all wrong (pretty much the only people with Blackberry phones are business people now) but RIM is a company that is heading down a very steep slope towards oblivion.

what Nintendo is doing now is to capture the core gamers first and then go after the casuals just to lose the "Nintendo is for casuals" image. they will do the same with WiiU even though it will most likely come with a game like Wii Sports

OT: Pachter is an idiot
