He does make some good points (yes, I read that entire thing) because there are things that the last few Zelda games could have done better, but they're points encompassed by elitism, which I cannot stand.

So he likes the original game the best? And? Of all the Zelda games I've played (which would be most of them), I'd honestly rank that one as the worst. That does not result in me trying to dictate what everybody else supposedly wants.

Just oen thing.

i agree that teh magi cof the first Zelda cannot be found in any others.

However. teh series went on a different angle from me. each game feels different but feeling Zelda still at teh same time. and yes probably OFT is teh best game ever.

Actually, I think every Zelda game (not counting handhelds or Zelda 2) has been better than the last.
Skyward Sword broke that norm however, since it's inferior to TWW and TP.

NES style Zelda might not work in 3D at all due to the camera perspective. The combat is an integral part of the game and there's no video game series I can think of that could translate its reflex-based 2D gameplay into the third dimension without any drawbacks or massive changes.

I say it's time that the Zelda series splits up. Perhaps OoT and its younger siblings aren't direct sequels to the old games and they probably will never be. Just like Super Mario 64 and other 3D Mario games have not been sequels to the Super Mario Bros. series. Just like the Metroid Prime trilogy, despite its excellence, cannot replace sidescrolling Metroid. The same happened to Contra. Castlevania. Mega Man. The list goes on and on.

I really don't think that 3D Zelda can be fixed completely. Of course it can be vastly improved by giving the player more freedom, but it cannot make the classic style obsolete.

Graphics may not be similar to that of new age Zelda, but 3D Dot Game Heroes I felt did a fine job emulating old school Zelda style gameplay. Of course it was lacking some things, but I would find that to be a good starting point.

I would love a New Legend of Zelda to be based off a graphics style like that.

The second to last sentence says something about Tevis Thompson writing fiction. I can agree with that.

Honestly, every Zelda game has not gotten worse. That's just wrong. Most people would say that ALTtP is better than the original Zelda. Also, I am one of those boring people that think that OoT is the best Zelda ever (with MM closely behind), so obviously I don't agree with him.

Me thinks the author is trying to be too serious and too egocentric.

He did some academic-type writing on video games eight years ago, so this is not the case of a college student complaining. Rather it appears to be someone who wants to be a professional writer complaining. Ironically, this appears to be written to appeal to jaded college gamers as serious scholarly writers don't use the word "sucks."

Has anybody tried the binding of Isaac? Just curious, I haven't, but the gameplay is supposed to be a modern take on the Zelda style (gameplay-wise). Mind you I'm not a fan of gore.

Important key: Zelda I has a charm and a sense of otherworldly mystery that is very difficult to replicate. One that no other Zelda has properly replicated except maybe Zelda II. Even possibly OoT and MM. SS is a much more tangible Zelda, and I like that. But the modern series may need to pull some inspiration back from its roots, or a 2D branch can be released which conveys that mystery much more powerfully though the obfuscation of a physical dimension.

About difficulty, I found the motion controls of SS pretty hard actually. Maybe I'm a noob, but I died a few times.

Separating the branches. They should have a take on old-school Zelda without derailing the modern version of Zelda. These need to be two separate branches. (See sales chart below for why)

There are two topics here actually: 1) the quality of the modern Zelda and what you would do to improve it if you were in charge. 2) The value of bringing back classical Zelda to the market.

Handheld Zelda. The two branches should be maintained on the portables as well as on the home consoles. 2D or 3D is no longer limited by weaker hardware. Have both on both consoles.

Importance of SS. The time spent on SS was not a waste, since it was the flagship for motion controls and had higher sales expectations. It's the motion+ strategy that failed mostly, the "platform" wasn't properly supported. SS as part of the Motion+ strategy had all the reason to exist. Low sales of SS are difficult to explain, and have little to do with the quality of the game itself. Something wasn't conveyed in marketing. With these past 3D Zelda games, the sales of SS vs TP actually match Majora's Mask vs OOT sales performance (N64 sequel):

Things to fix in SS. As for what I dislike about SS, despite everything I love about it, the tutoring needs to be a removable option. The story needs to be skippable (for experts), just like the HUD is dismissable in pro mode. The dialogues for upgrading items was also deadly to bear. Mind you, I enjoyed the fetch quests.

With these basic adjustments, the modern series should be a better fit for advanced users.

Maybe he's being stylistic? Perhaps that "sucks" was an aside in which his childhood speaks its mind, however immaturely.

I think you need to address the points rather than his writing. Unless you have no problem with what he wrote, just how he wrote it.
