Forums - Gaming Discussion - I feel a MASSIVE change in the gaming industry

"I think they will continue to float."

float? Both of them sold 600000 units in one week and over 1000000 software titles.
For the PS3 thats ~ 300 mio revenue. That is a bit more than float. Besides they are only starting. The PS3 is just entering the price range of mass market appeal and 2 months ago there was nothing to play. Similar for the 360 which had a massive quality problem this year. Yes Nintendo made an awesome headstart but I really doubt that this will damage the other two. If you want to play anything besides Nintendo games you will have to buy two consoles anyway for the forseeable future.

YES, potentially, yes the Wii may continue to kill everything,
but I want to see Xmas2008 sales before claiming the Wii is the winer by a LARGE marge.

Time to Work !

I too sense a disturbance in the Force.....but I think it's just Luke Skywalker and his band of rebels again.

It is true I think. I overhear people talking about the Wii everywhere I go, all ages-all types. Like Coke is the generic term for all colas, Nintendo has regained its status as the word for video gaming. It is so nice to see while in Gamestop or Bestbuy people clamoring around the Wii and DS sections while only a handful of people browse the other two. I have noticed this phenomenon developing for months now and it really sunk in when I recently saw a group of older teenagers -or possibly very young adults who work my neighborhood's grocery store (who look like the type that should be with what most of this forum would think, solidly in another brand's camp) going on and on about the Wii, and the extent the ones that did not have it planned to go to get it, and again at BestBuy I saw a group of scary older bully type teenagers buying a bunch of Wii games and arguing which ones they should get (so much for the kiddie argument). And while it may be anecdotal, I have not once in the past year overheard anyone talking of the other two. Considering I hear people talking about the Wii on nearly a daily basis I think is truly telling of the culture shift.

I'm not entirely sure you have the right idea about Capitalism and how the market works. If MS and Sony are making a profit, then they will continue in the market. theyare both aimed at ver different audiences to the Wii, and they both have much larger stategic aims (ie.control of the living room and te development of the integrated multimedia hub).

Yes people want the Wii, and why not? it's fun. But everyone also wanted an iPod. did that mean that no-one other companies went into the market? of course tey did, and they made massive profits from it. just becuase there is one very successful system does not mean that no other companies will go into the same market and pose competition?

Similarly though, i've had a number of parties at my place and people have seen what the PS3 can do. after hearing all the bad hype they see te system for themselves and are impressed with it's capabilities. they want one too. i've heard the same off 360 owners, it's not limited to the Wii. but what te Wii does have, is mass market appeal. people who have never been into computer games, aren't intersted in high end graphics, long strory lines and don't know much about hi-def are into it. not for games like SMG, but for games like Wii Sports, Play and Fit. the people i know who want a Wii are generally people i work with, older types who aven't a clue about 'harcore' games and think the console industry is for geeks and kids. they don't view the Wii as a games console and don't know anything about the PS3 or the 360. totally different market.

Your analogy of the Wii and iPod is very good i feel. yes, they are both likely to dominate the market, and make their companies mountains of money. but, they are both partly built on hype. people wanted an iPod because it was cool, funky, looked good, did cools things, but it was not the best gadget on the market, there were many MP3 players that did far better jobs than the iPod did, but they were never going to hijack the iPod bus due to the demand that had been created for it in the mass market.

There will always be a market for hardcore gamers who are obsessed with power and graphics (like many PS3 and 360 fans), who want that integrated multimedia hub, and so, there will be continued demand for them, and enough demand to make a profit.

In real terms, there is a lot more profit at stake here for MS and Sony than what Nintendo have managed so far. if either MS or Sony win the wider format war, and console war, their control over the ENTIRE home electronics industry will be incredable.

First, where do you get they sold more than a million software titles? as of this time I dont think those numbers were released (they are supposed to be put up sometime today).

Second 400 dollars is not the range of mass market appeal, at it's cheapest, it is still too much.

Finally, Nintendo is the only place to go for Nintendo's offerings, but what you find on the PS3 and the 360 is more often then not "not exclusive", with some exceptions. You must realise as the userbase of the Wii sells more and more, software sales increase and it will be easier for 3rd parties to sell alot on the console. Whatever perceived advantage the 360/PS3 have in term's of 3rd parties can not last. 3rd parties are companies, responsible to stock holders, employees and others invested in them to turn a profit. If the cost is too high for the amount of returns, they will continue to fail (as many developers are in terms of shrinking profits). That being the case they will be forced by facts, if not by initial choice to release their games on even more platforms (ie; Wii).

Wow, fantastic reasoning. How is prediting the doom of PS3 and 360 sales different from "daring" to believe that Wii sales might slow down at one point? There are plenty of people who want one of the two other consoles, like here in Scandinavia where the Wii really isn't doing that well at all. The entire world does not love the Wii, but big parts of it does. I think those parts will do as casuals often do; tire.
Go ahead, tell me I'm ignorant, I don't care. Happy new year!

Capitalism indeed, pity the 360 and Ps3 aren't making a profit for thier companies, both have been nothing but a liability. Its sobering watching the 360 and PS3 gamers so eagerly touted the emergence of the hardcore's domination earlier this holiday season only to have their hopes dashed by the Wii's performance this last week.

It's like the last holiday season all over again. So get ready for plenty of excuses why the Wii's success doesn't matter. Get ready for plenty of claims that the Wii's domination won't last. Get ready for promises of price cuts holding promise for the competition. Get ready for last year's anti-Wii Fudd all over again.

The wii isnt all about graphics, but gameplay. Gameplay which is completely different to any other console. Sony were nearly there with the eyetoy.

I have a wii and a ps3. The wii is great fun, but i still like to play more complex games with the eye candy the ps3 brings.

Imagine the next generation wii. Wii gameplay hooked up with eyetoy style controls aswell as the contoler, Mixed in with ps3 graphics and complexity.....mmmmm

what i find funny is now it is all wait til xmas 2008

last year at this time it was wait til xmas 2007...

well it has been 13 months and if the past 13 months is not enough to establish a solid trend i don't know what is.

the 360 and ps3 are more niche than the wii

the wii is priced ALMOST at mass market (sub200) pricing.

the gameplay on the GOOD wii games(for shooters-so far- MP3:C, mohh2-puzzle games- Z&W etc) is superior in my opinion- to ps3 and the 360 games of the same genre- fighting type games--will ssmb is coming soon...

graphically not one game yet has really pushed the wii to the limits..

for the next year i see more of the same

poor to great ps3, 360 and wii games come out.
sales to maintain around the same current -non holiday- levels for all 3 systems

the ps3 and 360 to maintain close parity- with the ps3 slowly gaining on the 360 in overall numbers...

and for the wii to continue to widen the sales gap.

and if that trend maintains....in xmas 2008 the people saying wait for xmas 2008 will say wait til 2009.
