Forums - Sony Discussion - So, Let's Talk PS3 Mass Effect 2 Sales

I remember saying they were going to be terrible a few weeks ago and it looks like I was right. I think Torillian (I could be wrong) told me it would leg its way to a million, but I don't think there's a chance of that happening.

It wasn't terrible. Bioware and EA weren't expecting much. This will be the start to create a multiplatform core for higher sales on the PS3 and 360 collectively. ME2 will have legs until ME3....just watch. There are so many PS3 owners who dont have it in the west.

Releasing a year-late port at full price is never a good idea, and almost without exception, your game will bomb.

Why would PS3 owners who have never played Mass Effect suddenly want to buy this shiny but still old RPG with its complicated universe, when for the same price, they could buy a brand new game?

They don't know what they're missing, but they'rle not going to pay $60 to find out.

Mass Effect 2 is worth more that 3/5 of the PS3's library. It is worth the money, especially with all the DLC. I have put 35 hours into the game and I am still not finish with my first play through. This is with all of the DLC.

I spend 40 hours on my first playthrough and it's a fantastic game.

I, however, bought it for £10 on PC and I don't think I would have spent the £40 to play it on PS3, which would have been a shame because, as you said, it is worth that much and, indeed, more.

The sales are good for a year old port. it will keep truding along fine imo, i think it could end up doing 1mil when all is said and done, and it might get a boost when ME3 comes out.

not to mention i think a lot of people will get it in the bargain bin, which is what i'm planning to do. because i've got too many other games to play and i'm not going to pay full price when i cant play the 1st one and its a year old. so thats my main problem, but sales will trudge alone fine imo.

Okay. I've done this in a few threads but... Okay.

Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 has sold close to 150k units in 2 Weeks of being on sale. It took BioShock 5 Weeks to reach similar sales, and BioShock ended up at over 800k units sold on the PS3.

Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 is the second game in a story-driven Trilogy. The PS3 does not have the first game, a game that released over 3 Years ago.

Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 costs, in the UK, costs £40. Mass Effect 2 on the 360 costs, in the UK, costs £15.

Our numbers for Mass Effect 2 on the 360 are hugely inflated. We had the 360 version alone at 1.6 Million units sold Worldwide by the end of March (After 6 Weeks). In reality, the game had sold 1.6 Million units on 360 and PC combined... With downloads included. This makes it seem like the PS3 version is selling much worse than it actually is in comparison to the 360 version.

Mass Effect 2 360 Sales - Here - Note: Go to the graph, look at WW sales as of Week 6. 1.56 Million Units.

Proof that EA said it's sold 1.6 Million at retail... Xbox 360, PC and Digital Sales combined - Here and Here. 2 Links from 2 big, reputable Websites.

Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 is doing as it deserves to do. It's way too high priced. It's late. It's the 2nd game in a Trilogy. It will more than likely hit 1 Million units in its lifetime.

I see no problem with how it's started.

I know, but what it means is that MS is often exposed to the risk of loss of exclusives, particularly now when globally, most popular titles sell roughly the same on each console.  For most developers this means multi is the safest route to go.  I don't mean MS has to own the studios outright, but it should engage in deals where it owns the IP fully and the developer is just developing it.  That way they keep control.

The whole 'sorta exclusive' is just a weak position to be in IMHO.

Your average 360 owner, though, doesn't really care about if a game is exclusive or not.  They just want to know if they can play it on the 360.

As for the ip/dev situation you mentioned, I'd really be suprised if the really talented independent studios out there would agree to a work-for-hire situation like that.  Most really want to retain the rights more than anything.

My major gripe is that the game only got ONE decent DLC (Lair of the Shadow Broker), when it had been promised that we would receive major content.  I wasted my credits downloading all those worthless ones that could have been packaged in one decent DLC for a lot cheaper price.  I'm pretty disgusted with Bioware and EA over the piss poor DLCs the game received.  I just want ME3 to conclude the series, and I'm not getting ANY MORE DLC after that game is over.

2/5s of ps3 library is 258 games, so yeah why would anyone pay full price for an old game when there are 258 better games

Overlord's good too. I'd like a full blown expansion pack for once, instead of these small add-ons.
