The PS3 is the second best gaming console on the market. People are assuming that it will not last as long as stated because of the Wii's inability to please the new generation of gamers. People will continue to buy Call of Duty games and this will insure the sucess of the 360 and PS3 for years to come.

"Sony Corp. (SNE)’s Kazuo Hirai said the PlayStation 3 console will have a 10-year lifespan, suggesting the 5-year-old video-game player won’t be replaced soon."

@bold. This is misleading... the 10-year lifespan has nothing to do with the PS3 being replaced soon or not. Sony works on a 10-year cycle, that didn't stop the PS3 from launching 6 years after the PS2. There is no causality here...

"Networks can’t deliver the full amount of data contained on game disks, Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president, said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas."

“It’s very important that we continue to have a dedicated home-based console,” Hirai said. “Relying solely on networks to deliver content is unfortunately just not possible. It’s still very difficult to have consumers download 50 gigabytes of data or more.”

The PlayStation 3 was introduced in November 2006. Some press reports suggested a new version would be unveiled at this year’s E3 video-game conference.

This would have nothing to do with the title and header of the article, unless sony is planing a digital-download only version of the PS3, or even of the PS4, which may or may not affect the launch timing.

To note this will be the first time a 2nd redesign is done on a home console. Looks like Sony might be integrating some kind of PSP-go strategy to the PS3 or something...

Hirai also told CNBC that turning around Sony’s money- losing TV manufacturing operation is crucial to company profitability. In December, Tokyo-based Sony sold its stake in a liquid-crystal-display venture with Samsung Electronics Co.

Sony is considering developing exclusive shows for its devices, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer said today in a separate interview.http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/reply.php?id=138713

“It’s coming,” Stringer said. “It’s natural.”

This tells me that, naturally, Sony will be much more focused on its entertainment side and on the Playstation brand to look for revenue lost from no longer running its TV business. It will have its own shows, boost marketing and have much a more focused business strategy. This can only be good for the games industry.

2 years from now they'll be lucky to be able to ship 5M in a year...

Maybe if WW III starts.

They are looking at another 14-15 milions year if they price cut in 2012 to 200$ and if they don't then the pricecut will happen in 2013  - both scenarios they will be above 10 milions in 2013.

Confirmed, PS4 won't be released until late 2016/early 2017. Looks like it is back to being a two horse race for dominance in the home console market.

I am not sure why people above are interpreting "PS3 won't receive it's replacement for another 5 years" as "We will release the PS4 soon while continuing to support the PS3, we just decided to word things differently this time to confuse you."

Hint: in 2010 we had 10th PS2 anniversary

What does this mean? TV-shows that will only work on a SONY TV?

I think he's talking about shows to unvail new products/devices. Like how Apple does, instead of doing CES.

We've come a long way. 10 years on the market seemed like an impossible situation a few years ago. Some posters even thought Sony might need to 'sit out' next gen as a result of the botched PS3 launch, slow launch sales and huge losses. Hell, even The Source said the PS3 would be lucky to reach 6m lifetime in Japan back then.

Shows how much this gen has changed and how much the opinions and expectations of this forum changed along with it.

Well it doesnt mean they cant launch a new one and keep selling Ps3s.

That's what they did with the PS2. The PS2 came out in 2000 and the PS3 was launched in 2006. It's 2012 now and the PS2 is still being sold.

Microsoft plans to do the same thing for the XBox 360. Even though the next XBox will probably launch in 2013, the XBox 360 will stay on the market until 2005 (10 years later).

The PS3 may last another 5 years, but If Sony releases a PS4 to soon, it make not get as much 3rd party support, because they will still be making PS3 games that they know will sell 500K- 1 million units. I don't think a lot of gamers would jump on the PS4 is it launched this year.
