Forums - Gaming Discussion - UK politician: Games cause kids to lose their childhood

Former Conservative Party leader and nondescript politician Iain Duncan Smith has spoken out against videogames with one of the more dramatic little bits of scaremongering we've seen. As well as mentioning the violence of games like Grand Theft Auto, the famously boring MP also stated that gaming can cause children to lose their childhoods.

"We are driving children to lose their childhood," states the grey man, "and some video games are incredibly violent, like Grand Theft Auto. They are meant to be 18 but nobody cares what it says on the label."

I'm guessing that by "losing their childhood," he means that children spend too much time playing videogames and not enough time playing outside where they can be abducted by pedophiles. If you ask me, and you didn't, going outside is overrated, especially with mad oldConservative MPS running around out there.

meh....

So he wants...what? Censorship of free speech. Videogames don't take children's childhoods away, bad parenting does. If your mom goes out and buys you GTA, the latest issue of Maxim, and rents you some R rated movies, the problem isn't with the makers of these products.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

The only things worse than politicians are UK politicians. Lol at "famously boring".

If I ever have kids you can be damn sure I'll limit their gaming. But, it will be my responsibility, and I don't think I'd be happy with politicians interfering.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Well, that was amusing, particularly the "famously boring" part.

For those who don't know, Duncan Smith was so uncharismatic that the Tories kicked him out and put a new leader after he'd had just two years in charge because he was unelectable.

I don't think many people will listen to him

In this day and age, hanging out beyond 7pm (in my area) may have bad implications!

"Life is but a gentle death. Fate is but a sickness that results in extinction and in the midst of all the uncertainty, lies resolve."

If games drive people away from reality, their reality must already suck.

I LOVE ICELAND!

That guy looks.....evil, he probably has child skeletons in his basement with several other soon to be victims hanging up from the ceiling by meat hooks and chains. He looks like a child murderer.

Seriously, he looks like a sick bastard.

I think alcohol should be banned because children might get their hands on it.

I think it's just a bad photo of him. I don't think he's ever done anything interesting in his life, let alone kill anyone.

Then again, serial killers are often the person people least suspect...
