Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 finally Hacked

seems like to much of a hassle.

It only has yet to be hacked because it wasn't selling so well. Now that its taking off due to price/slim its gained the attention of hackers.

Keep in mind that ps360 share almost all the same games, so hackers probably didn't bother with it until now. Same as why Apple has so few viruses.

Sorry but thats crap. Both 360 and Wii were hacked early in their lifetime when install base was very low. The original Xbox was hacked early on and it never got to have a large install base. PS3 hasn't been hacked simply because no one has worked it out yet, the fact it is difficult to hack increases hackers motivation to crack it so they can show off their huge e-peen to the world, hence why we have so many PS3 hacks that turn out to be fake.

ANything programmed can be hacked. It only takes a large group of people who want to do it.

Early on, the Wii exploded and the 360 was the only kid on the block for a year. Therefore they were hacked right away. PS3 started off very slowly and had no real incentive to be hacked. No big difference in games and a small userbase.

Now its growing quickly since the slim launched and it is gaining popularity.

The original xbox was an off the shelf pc. It wasn't hard to hack and it had halo and the only real online service. It had real incentive to invest time to hack it.

I'm sure there has always been the few who worked on the PS3, but it is linux based and therefore harder anyways. Now its gaining a lot of users as well as bigger exclusive games.

Again, its the same issue as with Apple and viruses. If Apple were 85-90% of the market, it would be the same as MS.

There wont be a a "Full fledge hack" because the PS3's today cannot use Linux and you need Linux.

It's very impractical, who'd wanna do this?

30m units and still not hacked..

Both the Original Xbox and the Xbox 360 was hacked within months.. both prior to any real popularity, both within a year of release. The iPhone was hacked within months aswell, the iPhone 3G S within minutes. The truth is that people give their best effort to hack electronics as soon as they release, many just to be able to claim that first hack recognizion. And others just to be able to modify it so they can get things for free. The Playstation 3 is 3 years old and 30m units strong.. and still no one has been able to come up with a easy to use hack.

Sales has nothing to do with it.

Did you really not read anything I wrote?

xbox = Was a PC, not a custom built console. It had a HDD and internet connectivity and crappy MS software. It was a great platform for hackers and they knew it immediately and it wasn't $600.

360 = was a only 'nextgen' hardware for a year and was the successor to a system that was the king of modding/hacking and it wasn't $600.

PS3 = late comer with no real difference beyond Bluray initially and bluray was hacked before it even launched, at least the security was. Now its near the 360 in usage and has some big exclusives and its finally in a price range that many people are purchasing it. So now, a multitude of hackers are finally owning the item and spending time tearing it apart..... and its now far below $600.

It will be fully hacked in less than 6 mos.

What is your defintiion of hacked, it certainly wasn't considered hacked by the vast majority of the scene for a lot longer than months....

The ability to play pirated games was a workaround the security of the 360 not actually breaking it, this didn't happen properly until the first exploitable dashboard was found.

I suggest you go read xbox-scene because the first hacks didn't arrive for the 360 till 2007.  The PS3 security isn't infallible, no system is and anyone that says otherwise quite frankly knows nothing about hacking or the scenes involved in it.  I'll not be so bold to put a date on the PS3 being hacked but I assure you it will be eventually, especially now Linux support has been cut from the Slim (nothing like a console manufacturer saying you cannot do something with your hardware to drive hackers in their droves to a cause).  The saving grace for the PS3 might be the massive increase in activity in the xbox scene over the new hacks released for it.  Also for the record, you cannot hack any new 360 (unless its really old stock) as they all had the updated 2nd bootloader installed that removes the known exploits, of course any 360 updated with the July 09 update is unhackable too, at least for now....
