I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

Hopefully next gen they'll at least have optical output (which is already considered 'legacy' even now)

There is a distinct difference in quality between Stereo-DPLII and Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1.  That's probably my biggest gripe about the Wii.

I typically use the Wii in conjunction with Dolby Pro Logic IIx to upmix it to 7.1....MP3 sounds real nice...

reasons why many people don't care;

1. many people probably just use the speakers in their tv for sound, thus Stereo (or the Dolby thing that is supposed to immitate surround from 2 speakers) is the best you could get.
2. many seriously cannot tell the difference between surround and anything more, with the exception that various sounds come from different directions.
3. people like me find it irritating having different sounds from different speakers, i can cope with head/earphone stereo possibly because they are right next to the ear, so unless you have a particularly excellent surround set-up i would just put it on mono. (generally you have to have the right shaped room with all the speakers in the right places for it to work well)

I wasn't trying to, what's the term, "bash" (hating teh internetz speek) you by the way, i think what i put sounded like i was angry. 'twasn't.

The extra space on the Wii discs compared to GC is vastly more important for good sound than having Dolby True HD extra special 23.3 surround sound. edit; ^ distortion?...it certainly shouldn't be distorted, that has nothing to do with surround sound....you may have poor speakers, or maybe a fault in the Wii has occured. although the remote speaker is W@*& quality tbh...i will agree that distorts (i keep mine on low volume), but then that was the only thing i ever saw as a gimmick, so it has been above my expectations so far (LoZ TP used it pretty good) Oh yeah, at uni i use Mono too, my TV has one speaker which is strangely on one side (rather than on the front).....ignoring the quality of speaker, i can't tell the difference.

So the wii has Dolby Pro Logic IIx, I'm confused.

BTW- I'm still planning to get a wii even if the audio isn't that great. I just thought it was kinda of weird that they didnt upgrade but after reading the posts I see why it wasn't that big of a deal. I guess most people don't care about audio that much.

What's the cost/benefit ratio of this feature?  Is it a major console selling point?

You probably will find the desired answers in the answers to those two questions.

It has to be pennies now. You see cheap-ass sound cards with more features than the Wii selling for just a few dollars.

I was pretty bent that there was no optical out on the Wii. Play a game like Guitar Hero III on 360/PS3 with a nice sound system and you'll see what I mean, when the crowd starts going nuts during songs it really amps you up. The clarity is another huge benefit. And to think what games like SMG or MP3 could have done with just 5.1 makes it even worse.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

I'm on mono audio... but I can only hear on one ear, so it doesn't matters :)

No - Dolby Pro Logic IIx is basically just an extension of Pro Logic II.  It takes what would go to the rear speakers and remaps some of the sounds to go to the surround back (7.1) speakers instead.

Side note: Before I went to college (and played games in my floormate's super game center) everything was RF baby

Mmmm radio interference on my TV...yeaaaaaaaah!

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Dobly Pro Logic is a surround sound processing techology designed to decode soundtracks encoded with Dolby Surround.

If I'm not mistaken, the sound is always encoded more or less the same way - with the matrix-encoding of Dolby Surround. Then, the Dolby Pro Logic decoder can recovers the surround sound. Dolby Pro Logic decoders decode Dolby Surround into 4.0 sound, Dolby Pro Logic II decoders decode/upmix that to 5.1, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoders to 6.1 or 7.1.

Dolby Pro Logic technology is mostly on the decoder (your receiver) and not on the encoder (the Wii). If your receiver supports Dolby Pro Logic IIx, you'll get 6.1 or 7.1 sound. Dolby Digital, that's another story.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.
