Forums - Website Topics - Question about Demon's Souls classifiction in VGChartz GotY story

I also agree actually.

Though I also think the terms JRPG and WRPG are stupid.

I agree but I have not been able to find a better classification. JRPGs are more like the turn-based games, especially when they are actually turn-based. Meanwhile the WRPGs are dynamic, except for the D&D system BioWare has with Baldur's gate, NWN, KOTOR, Dragon Age. So I guess it can come down to strategy RPGs and not so Strategy RPGs. However the ones that come from the east end extremely linear with endless cutscenes and so on and so forth... you get the point, there just isn't anything to classify them as that I have found,.

So in other words Demon's Souls is WRPG of the Year at VGChartz?

Or better yet RPG of the Year? O_o

....I would go for RPG of the year, or even(though I disagree because I don't think it is relatable to a JRPG at alll) winning both WRPG and JRPG of the year, but it can't just win JRPG, and not even be in the running for a WRPG. The game is about as pure WRPG as you can get. :P

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Here's another less serious argument

jRPG = ridiculously big swords

...

JRPGs are defined by their linear plot progression and lack of development (both character and plot) related decisions. WRPGs are defined by the ability to make decisions which affect the plot, progression, and character.

Demon's Souls has none of this, and is hardly the first JRPG to give you choices on where you fight at any one time (Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean games all give you some options as to where you wish to go in some games, options that don't really effect the plot).

My only conclusion is that you are basing this decision on the art style, which makes the topic hilariously hypocritical. Also would you mind adding me on PSN (naznatips) so I can check your trophies to see that you actually completed this game and aren't making a troll thread based on what you read on the internet?

well here's a counter argument. Demon's Souls has more in common with Kingdom Hearts than any wRPG. It's an action RPG with a linear story, a central hub, several worlds you visit with their own backgrounds and stories. Unlike your common wRPG there is minimal power over the story with really only a major choice near the end and there is no conversation system.

edit: furthermore, the combat system that is all about melee combat and locking onto your adversaries has more in common with Zelda than a wRPG.

Well in that case, perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to classify Kingdom Hearts as a JRPG...

...in either case, I haven't played much of Kingdom Hearts, but if it has a lot in common with Demon's Souls, then it is, imho, a very deep and pure WRPG with a lot of fun to be had, as well as some tremendous difficulty.

King's Field, imho, is a WRPG as well, from the same developers, and it was one of the first games I ever bought with my own money. It is in NO WAY relatable to a JRPG.

...but again, I'm not a big Kingdom Hearts player, so I can't refute or agree with anything you've mentioned. From what you've stated, I think KH sounds a lot like an Adventure game....however, lol, imho, Demon's Souls is a WRPG, at the heart of its gameplay. Again, though, saying it's a game that is like many other JRPGs is a valid argument, saying that it is a JRPG because it's made by Japanese people, is not.

See, I always thought the destinction came from the gameplay, not the story. Now the most I can say is that I have seen an imported version being played, never played it myself, but it seemed like it played more like a WRPG than most JRPGs.

That kind of hints at another thing I hate -- too many sub genres.

I hate having action/adventure, action, adventure, FPS, TPS, JRPG, and WRPG.  Things would be so much simpler if it just went back to action/advetnure, shooter, and RPG.

And I know games often bleed into several genres, but generally a game is one main genre with several sub-genres.  When you're saying what the game is, you don't call something like a Borderlands an action FPS/WRPG with MMO characteristics, it's an shooter with some RPG elements and just classify it as a shooter and be done with it.

not all jRPG's are turn based though.  I think people would have a hard time playing a jRPG with an action based combat system like SMT: Devil Summoner 2 and come away thinking it's a wRPG.

Yeah because MadWorld and Monkey Island should totally be competing because they are so much alike.

Gaming is more complicated than it used to be. We have more genres because we need them to give more games fair representation. Otherwise we would end up with a whole lot of GotY lists that are nothing but God of War, Mass Effect, and Call of Duty year after year after year... have fun with that.

See I haven't played that. The most exposure I have to JRPGs where there isn't a set turn-based combat would be the later FFs. Also played some Golden Sun ( I loved that one, solely because of the puzzles) Legend of the Dragoon, but not much else. Maybe I'm just misguided on the whole JRPG thing.
