Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Final Fantasy XIII get a rating over 90%?

Hopefully not, but I think it will. Most likely in the low 90s.

HOWEVER, my guess is that unless Final Fantasy XIII advertises heavily, it will not sell too well in the West.  Western audiences have very much moved away from JRPGs; in addition, the Western market has expanded, and most new Western players are conditioned to prefer WRPGs over JRPGs.

It's like anime and magna, which were a cool fad in the 1990s. Nowadays, most people would laugh at you and call you a Japanophile if you talk about anime.  Most people just don't care for those Japanese imports anymore.

Metascore will be totally mixed, probably around 85. because now adays, there's always a bunch of sites/magazines that like to downscore anything popular just because. As for the 'main' review places, like IGn, GameSpot, etc, they'll do their normal thing of upscoring the game just because its Final Fantasy and because it has 'uber hot graphics'. Just like they did for all the previous titles. Expect a review from those sites between 9.4-9.7.

FFXIII is one of the most hyped and anticipated games purely due to its brand name.  It selling less than 2 million in the US would be a sign of the world ending.

About the anime and manga thing, I would say that for the most part, animation in general is now a laughing stock besides Pixars movies and rare gems like Avatar: The Last Airbender.

considering the fact that average review score in japan right now is about 38/100 i doubt that.
no, most of the complaints are about:
non existing difficulty level, The game is hard as hell when you get to Gran Pulse.
batles that you always win by simply choosing autobattles and tapping X all the time(and even by playing them it's always about just attacking since you don't have any control over your team mates apparently), Who cares? I never did in Tales of Vesperia or many other games I played. And its not that easy to win a battle are you nuts? Go play the game... Chain Breaking, Optima Change, and each character gets there own "Scene Drive" or what you'd call a Limit Break.
extremely linear gameplay and level design. Its as linear as Final Fantasy X pretty much, until you get to Gran Pulse, which is HUGE.
almost non existing sidequests for 3/4 of the game, There are over 60 missions and a lot of them are fun and hard. You fight some epic bosses/monsters.
no shops in the game except those at save points and there's nothing really to buy, It made things way more convenient, I don't see that as a bad thing.
hardly any town in the game.
you can't avoid battles(basically you fight every monster you meet), You can easily avoid battles.

really bad story and awful use of jrpg antics. I personally enjoyed the story a lot, to each their own.

whole pacing in the game is basically: run through corridor-like level -> fight monster -> watch movie -> run through corridor-like level -> fight monster -> watch movie -> run through corridor-like level -> watch movie -> fight boss -> watch movie.

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

Quite the contrary.  Anime got less 'popular' because it got mainstream.  Its all over so its just part of the norm.  Turn on the TV any day and you'll see Naruto and Pokemon during the day and Cowboy Bebop and Shin Chan at night.  It lost its edge and became as marketed as Rap Music and well...gaming.

Also Raichu hit on it a little bit.  Americans are somewhat disillusioned by Animation currently.  Hardly any good animation has been coming out in America.  But it isn't helping that most of the good stuff from Japan isn't being brought over here...just the stuff they can get the cheapest (such as the harem and shonen junk).  And it doesn't help that the American ANime industy is basically being destroyed from the inside out (but that's kind of a good thing).

It also doesn't help that animation isn't considered a storytelling medium in the West like it is in Japan.  This is why American cartoons are either aimed at children or are animated sitcoms aimed at adults.  In Japan, animation can range from children shows to adult oriented drama.  Anime and manga have a ton of variety which is why it got so popular in the first place.

I was somewhat interested in Final Fantasy XIII, so I checked out the recent previews and reviews of Final Fantasy XIII on YouTube.

My jaws dropped when I saw the game use the goddamned turn-based ATB combat system, which looks ridiculously outdated. I was like, "WTF?" The gameplay annoyingly switches in and out of combat mode and exploration mode. Nowadays I simply do NOT tolerate any game that does not utilize an unified game mode and seamless transition between combat, exploration and dialogue.

Final Fantasy XIII still does not have interactive dialogue trees and dynamic choices, (none that I could see from the YouTube videos.) You would have thought this is 2010, and a RPG would at least offer some choices to players. It is the most linear Final Fantasy ever, filled with an endless stream of over-the-top melodramatic cutscenes of girly gay boys. If I want to watch "awesome" cinematics, I'll go to the theater and watch Avatar again.

After checking out the videos on YouTube, I've decided that Final Fantasy XIII is not getting my money and business. That much I am certain.

I have played the game and no it will not have a rating of over 90%
The game to me WASN'T the next-gen RPG we were waiting for (like FFX was back in 2001)
The game is VERY linear and the puzzles are very limited.
The areas are very corridor like and doesn't allow the player much freedom like other FF.
There's only freedom after around 20 hours. A 20-hour long tutorial? Ridiculous.
I daresay FFX-2 was MUCH more better than FFXIII. Guess my expectations were too high.
You guys will understand when you actually play the game.
just my opinion xD

You know I thought that was a bad thing, but I'm replaying FFVIII right now and I just realized the first time I actually got some bit a freedom was when I was 21 hours into the game...then I started to think of other FF games and there also very similar.

FFVII too

I don't think it will get 90% metacritic based on early reviews. I just hope the story is better than FFXII. If its as good as FFX then I'll be happy. Final Fantasy VII (my first FF game) is still my favorite, then FFIX, then FFX, then VIII, then FFXII, then FFX-2. I played FFVI in the PS1 anthology, but never got far enough to really rate the game. Just couldn't get into it.

I'm much more hyped for Final Fantasy XIII Versus now after reading some disappointing FFXIII opinions & reviews. Also interested in trying Final Fantasy XIV this year. I never got into FFXI before due to the monthly fees.
