HOWEVER, my guess is that unless Final Fantasy XIII advertises heavily, it will not sell too well in the West.  Western audiences have very much moved away from JRPGs; in addition, the Western market has expanded, and most new Western players are conditioned to prefer WRPGs over JRPGs.

It's like anime and magna, which were a cool fad in the 1990s. Nowadays, most people would laugh at you and call you a Japanophile if you talk about anime.  Most people just don't care for those Japanese imports anymore.

FFXIII is one of the most hyped and anticipated games purely due to its brand name.  It selling less than 2 million in the US would be a sign of the world ending.

 

About the anime and manga thing, I would say that for the most part, animation in general is now a laughing stock besides Pixars movies and rare gems like Avatar: The Last Airbender.
