Quite the contrary. Anime got less 'popular' because it got mainstream. Its all over so its just part of the norm. Turn on the TV any day and you'll see Naruto and Pokemon during the day and Cowboy Bebop and Shin Chan at night. It lost its edge and became as marketed as Rap Music and well...gaming.
Also Raichu hit on it a little bit. Americans are somewhat disillusioned by Animation currently. Hardly any good animation has been coming out in America. But it isn't helping that most of the good stuff from Japan isn't being brought over here...just the stuff they can get the cheapest (such as the harem and shonen junk). And it doesn't help that the American ANime industy is basically being destroyed from the inside out (but that's kind of a good thing).
