Microsofts losses are abysmol. They have gone from very bad to doing well (barring that 1 billion for RROD)

Sony on the other hand, it's sad to see how next quater the playstation division will be unprofitable, all that hard work from the PS1 and PS2 days and for what?

Nintendo .. well what can I say?

Edit - I might add, will this be the first year MS can possibly make a billion in profit?

That sounds a tad high, no? Sony managed it only one year, 1999 (PS1 peak). Microsoft making it would be a huge feat.

@RVDondaPC: It isn't just fanboy chatter. See what happened to Sega? This stuff is relevant. Sony in particular can't continue on their current path, which is why people have been saying they're doooomed (exaggerated, of course).

On the other hand, sales are also important on their own. Third parties don't give a crap what Sony / Ninty / MS is making on their consoles, only how much of their software they can sell on it. We care about this because we care about what new games will come, and where they will go. Though I guess you can argue the profits of the third parties would tell this story as well...

Saga like Nintendo was a video game company. Sony and MS are not video game companies, they have video game divisions that work as part of a team with other divisions. If Sony has to use the Blu Ray drive on their PS3 to generate millions or billions of Dollars for other divisions in the company but hurts the profits of the gaming division then that's what Sony has to do. Saga and Nintendo don't have that problem, because all they are is a video game company. So if you try to compare Nintendo's financials to Sony's video game division then you are missing the big picture. If Sony was a video game company only than the UMD format probably would not have been used for the PSP and a much cheaper more appropriate software for video games probably would have been used, but because Sony deals with movies they were thinking big picture and it hurt the PSP. Had it been successful Sony would be reaping the rewards two-fold because of the video game division but much of those profits would have been given to their film divisions on their financials.

You do know it's Sega, right?

Well they made $312 million last Q, I don't see why they would start losing that much money on the elite, so another big profit in this Q is likely, maybe 500 mill?

Financial performance should be discussed in the proper threads when quarterly earning come out.

Sales performance should be discussed in the weekly sales threads.

People discussing financial performance in sales threads are generally trying to distract the discussion from poor weekly sales of their preferred console.

Also, the financial chart you listed is not entirely accurate when comparing gaming revenue for current consoles. You cannot break out non-xbox revenue from MS EDD division (PC games, Mac software, Zune, etc), and Sony/Nintendo numbers are combined for all of their consoles. You cannot break out DS/Wii or PS2/PS3/PSP profits/losses.

No.

Sales should be talked about in sales discussions.

Profits, or lack of them... Should be talked about in profit discussions.

Sony can possibly profit this quarter too. Which will be a surprise.

How exactly, 600+ million loss last Q ......

I don't like the idea of doing this officially as it will just make Nintendo look better and mostly everyone else look worse. I usually do it personally, though.

I would really like to see actual financial data... but that information is really hard to get.

This site estimates sales of video games based on a set of data. Financial information could be estimated, but different stores have different sales, with different margins. MS and SONY take a certain cut for a specific number of titles sales.

Each title can also be split up into publisher (may be different for each region), the console maker, and the developer. In the cases you would also need to know the price for licensing.

Also, they would need to keep track of all peripherals (depending on whether you're keeping track of the consoles makers).

They would also need to keep track of marketing budgets, R&D budgets, manufacturing costs etc.

If you don't one of the factors into consideration, you may end up with a biased view of what is making money and what is not.
