That sounds a tad high, no? Sony managed it only one year, 1999 (PS1 peak). Microsoft making it would be a huge feat. @RVDondaPC: It isn't just fanboy chatter. See what happened to Sega? This stuff is relevant. Sony in particular can't continue on their current path, which is why people have been saying they're doooomed (exaggerated, of course). On the other hand, sales are also important on their own. Third parties don't give a crap what Sony / Ninty / MS is making on their consoles, only how much of their software they can sell on it. We care about this because we care about what new games will come, and where they will go. Though I guess you can argue the profits of the third parties would tell this story as well... |
Saga like Nintendo was a video game company. Sony and MS are not video game companies, they have video game divisions that work as part of a team with other divisions. If Sony has to use the Blu Ray drive on their PS3 to generate millions or billions of Dollars for other divisions in the company but hurts the profits of the gaming division then that's what Sony has to do. Saga and Nintendo don't have that problem, because all they are is a video game company. So if you try to compare Nintendo's financials to Sony's video game division then you are missing the big picture. If Sony was a video game company only than the UMD format probably would not have been used for the PSP and a much cheaper more appropriate software for video games probably would have been used, but because Sony deals with movies they were thinking big picture and it hurt the PSP. Had it been successful Sony would be reaping the rewards two-fold because of the video game division but much of those profits would have been given to their film divisions on their financials.
