I remember ZP's rant about how the videogame industry and videogamers lust to be like the movie industry in regards to cultural influence and mass appeal. The Uncharted series play off this in a big way, and feeds right into it. Uncharted, due to its nature, is hoped to be far more than just a really good videogame (even if it is derivative and familiar). It has to be a game changer, that makes the masses take videogames more seriously as a means of storytelling. The industry actually wants people who don't play, to watch Uncharted 2 being played and think it is a movie, like the way the PS3 ads show. |
Bingo.

One of the things I found troubling regarding the Uncharted 2 talk, is how people were making it out to be a reason why the PS3 was selling better. People here bought into the hype also, having Uncharted 2 being a reason for the increase in sales. People expect it to be such, because it is a high quality title. People then expect that means that people who don't own PS3s will buy a PS3 just to play it as a top reason. I believe God of War 3 is likely in that category. Some people also made Killzone 2 out to be such. And now, there is lamenting that Uncharted 2 isn't doing Modern Warfare 2 level buzz saleswise (or even half of it, say Gears of War).
People are actually upset that Borderlands (FPS-RPG hybrid) is doing as well as it has?
I am curious what is wrong with Uncharted 2 doing 2-3 million in sales, getting a movie deal, and getting another game in the series? Say it becomes a franchise title to own if you have a Playstation system (like Ratchet and Clank) even if it isn't a reason alone to go out and buy a Playstation system? Isn't that good enough?
