Aside from the motion control which did have some impact, Nintendo benefited alot from Microsoft's marketing and Sony's mistakes surrounding the PS3 price...

Basically Microsoft had done a tremendous job associating its console with fps games/shooters...

This is very good when targeting that market segment, however this is not so good in that in the mind of most adults they do associate the console with shooters and violent games, more so than they would do the PS3 ( even if outside of 5-6 flagship games the games on either console are similar). But fact is the 360 has the shooter image which will repel traditional mums and dads shopping for chrismas gifts for their young children...

So that group is left with the Wii and the PS3 and the PS3 price repelled most of those customers, pushing them in Nintendo's lap...

This is a real slap in the face to Nintendo. I dont think your giving them enough credit and downplaying what they have done this gen.

No one pushed anything into Nintendo's lap, they took it.

Ya know i own a nice PC, Wii and PS3. Im a Nintendo fan from 86. But i repect MS and Sony, even if i dont always like the things they do, $50 a month for Live and PS3 $600 at launch. So it really pisses me off when i see people downplay the Wii and Nintendo like that.

I guess some people out there just cant give Nintendo its due but thats just really sad.

PS: Im as hardcore a gamer as there is out there and i own and play my Wii all the time. Even more than my PS3 *GASP*.

I disagree on 2 points:

Mario Kart - The steering isn't accurate enough.

Mario Galaxy - It controls like an absolute dream and is perfect for the Wii.

Other than that you've got some good points.

I somewhat agree with you on MarioKart.  A joystick is definitely more accurate, I guess I just disagree by thinking the motion controls are accurate "enough" and enough more fun to make it worth playing that way.

Galaxy, for the most part, doesn't use motion controls at all.  There's the shake you give for a second jump, but that could just as easily be replaced with pressing a button (which would be more accurate, as well).  Have you ever seen the Zero Punctuation review of Galaxy?  While I like the game more than he did, I think he was spot on with the controls.
I did enjoy the Manta Ray levels (and rolling the ball, to a lesser extent), but honestly those felt tacked on. Like "Hey, this is on Wii, we should add a motion control level or 2."

SMG: Oh yeah - I just mean the IR pointing! You're right, there wasn't much else, but I thought it was a masterstroke.

@max power

BTW i love the name. Where did you get it off a hair dryer?

Anyways i think you have good points about the motion controls only working well in some games but whats wrong with that. I think a system with motion controls for some games and normal controls for others is the right way to go.

FPS, MMO, RTS: All work better with MC imho. Also some over the shoulder action games. I been playing infamous and i think this game would rock so much more with MC. The only thin is it would need a few more buttons.

Not only havemotion controls lead the way. What I found most interesting of the console was the IR+Nunchuck.

Having a mouse like device from your sofa - it has worked pretty well.

well Ail your argument makes one thing clear; Nintendo and the industry are two seperate things... Xbox360 and PS3 are within the industry.

It isn't a revolution, it is an enhacement of experience

The revolution is in the controls. Not only is the motion control fantastic, but being able to play a game with your hands seperate from each other is more comfortable.

When relatives come over, the non gamers, I just let them play Wii Sports/Resort, its usually quite entertaining for them. They just pick up the wiimote and start swinging, its amazing how theres almost zero learning curve on those games.

I also showed them RE4 from the intro onwards, since people have saw or heard of the RE movies, they go, woa this is like a movie, then as I start playing, it becomes why don't they die in one shot?? then lose interest lol ... of course with RE4, I will even translate some of the Spanish spoken by the ganados and tell them what a hit game this was, but this entertains me more than them.

Wii succeeded in attracting the casual market with the control scheme and the new types of games in your home, but its hard to shake the feeling its also alienating some core gamers/games.

Casuals want simplicity, core gamers want something more challenging and cutting edge graphically. Where will Ninty draw the line next time around?
