God of War 3 & Heavy Rain is the biggest thing going for the system while the Xbox 360 has quite a few big games coming down the pipeline. I expect both systems to trade blow for blow by the year rather than by the month. So while the PS3 had a strong 2009, I expect it to have a weak 2010, but then come back for a strong 2011. |
Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Mass Effect, Halo Reach and Fable III are all great games, but they won't push consoles. Most of these titles are the second, or third iteration of the series which have already appeared on the 360. Everyone who want these games have already bought a 360. Mass Effect and Halo Reach may produce a 20,000-50,000 boost in hardware, but that will be its first week. Natal on the other hand could help boost interest in the 360.
Sony has lined up Gran Turismo 5 (7 million+), and God of War 3 (3 million+) early in the year, they will push consoles. This is the first time these series will appear on the console in all its glory. There hasn't been full games from these series in years. The excitement and demand is there.

On topic, I think it's possible that the PS3 could get the gap down to 5.2 million or so, but it might not manage that. If it does though, it would be an amazing accomplishment. |
The gap will be around 5.25 million by the first week of January 2010. I think it could go down to 3-4 million by Q4 2010 depending on how many consoles Gran Turismo 5 and God of War 3 move. From there it is all a matter on the success of Natal. Will it be enough to push the 360 over the PS3 once again. I think Sony has done a good job of putting big games in H1 2010 to take advantage of the PS3 excitement and price point, which could sustain sales in the 175-250 thousand range.
2011 Predictions
Wii: 17m (100 million total)
360: 13m (63 million total)
PS3: 15m (61 million total)
