Developing HD games is also 'risky'. Just ask Free Radical, GRiN, Sega Racing Studio, Factor 5, Pandemic Studios...

You know what all of those studios had in common? They made crappy games, and paid the price.

Sega Rally Revo was pretty much the opposite of crappy.  And it still bombed so hard Sega closed the developer within six months.

Actually, Sega's one of the few publishers to really have almost nothing but bombs on the HD machines and some ridiculous success on Wii.

It was the worst racing game I've played in my entire life.

When they're just so many better racers on a system, a game like Sega Rally is totally obsolete.

HotD's a large series?  Afaik the Wii port of 2&3 is the first one to break a million units since HoTD2 back in the 1990s?

Sega's HD games are niche?  Really?  Virtua Fighter 5, Sega Rally Revo, Iron Man, Armored Core 4, Beijing Olympics, Phantasy Star Universe, Full Auto 1-2, Virtua Tennis 3/2009, the Golden Compass, Golden Axe, Condemned 1-2, Universe at War, Stormrise, Yakuza 3/Kenzan, The Club, Viking, Incredible Hulk, Bayonetta, Initial D and 2 Sonic games were all niche now?

Not a large series, exactly. But...ah fine, I'll accept that you're right here.

Now:

Virtua Fighter: Fighting games in general are decreasing in popularity, and VF5 was pretty sucky, compared to the competition.

Sega Rally: It's a rally game.

Iron Man: Movie game.

Armored Core: Armored Core. Yes, it is niche.

Beijing Olympics: Are you serious? That game was utter crap.

Phantasy Star Universe: Stop picking out awful games, or I'll do the same.

Full Auto: See previous.

Virtua Tennis: Tennis games aren't very popular.

Golden Compass: Movie game.

Golden Axe: sucky game.

Condemned: Survival horror, and not RE or SH. Too scary for most.

Universe at War: Shoddy PC port.

Stormrise: Awful game.

Yakuza 3: Sold excellently in Japan, not even released in the West.

The Club: Again... bad.

Viking: Once again...bad.

Hulk: Movie game.

Bayonetta: NOT EVEN OUT YET. Come on! It released in Japan, and did reasonably well.

Initial D: I've never even heard of it.

2 Sonic games: Sonic Unleashed, and a Sonic: The Hedgehog remake?

So yes, bad SEGA games and lazy games based on movie licenses don't sell on HD consoles. Or on Wii, with the exception of Sonic Unleashed.

Oh man, I can't believe I'm doing this but...

Sega Rally: Rally games are huge in Europe, they're Codemasters bread and butter.  Sega Rally was big classic IP (way bigger than HotD) and the game got top reviews.  And yet it BOMBED.

A few top reviews and a lot of mediocre reviews.

Rally games are nowhere near as popular in Europe as you might think. Certainly more popular than in the US, but aside from the Colin McRae series there is simply nothing.

We've had this thread MANY, MANY, MANY times.

And I'm sick of saying the same thing again and again, so I will leave you with this:

If a publisher or developer genuinely thought it would be advantageous to develop on Wii, they would. And they do. If a developer genuinely thinks it would be advantageous to make a certain TYPE of Wii game, they would do so. Developers are not so fickle as to DESPISE a console so much that they will not develop for it without a good reason, especially if they know the game is going to post a good profit.

These people have been in the business for years. They know how it works. Who are we to tell them how to do their job?

yes let us see.

3 studios have gone bust developing on the HD twins, most of the rest are posting financial losses and doing staff cuts.

How does this in your brain conclude that they know what they are doing?

sure there have been a few games that have helped save some developers but overall performance of those companies is bad.

"3 studios have gone bust developing on the HD twins, most of the rest are posting financial losses and doing staff cuts."

Shrugged off with "they made bad games", ignoring the quality of the past games of those developers.

I am a web developer / designer. I have recently started my own company. I can tell you, these are not good professionals.

1) Firstly, I wouldn't dream of avoiding 50% marketshare no matter how hard it was.
2) I wouldn't dare insult my clients and then expect them to buy my products (EA and their DS "test", Capcom and their "Wii couldn't handle the first screen")
3) I wouldn't accuse my clients for my incompetence (lazy work = no $)
4) I wouldn't differentiate my clients (offer a great website for someone at 500€ and another one a crappy one for the same price)
5) If I start bleeding money left and right, I might consider changing my business plan SO FAR.

There is so much right with this post I find it sad that it was completely ignored...

Plus it's half of Maelstrom's points, put in possibly the best abridged form possible.

well offcourse haha.

if it was dev on a HD console the game that doesn't sell = BAD GAME.

if it was dev on Wii and game that doesn't sell = Wii Fault blah blah blah audience

the sooner they realise that NO GAME WILL SELL TO 100% user base the better.

PS2 most reat games only sold to about 5% of the userbase

You can post here without trolling. Just keep everything factual and relevant.

I agree with the OP mostly, as there wasnt a good large budget title on wii from 3rd partys. An exclusive one what is not competiting with the HD version of itself, and plays to the wii strengths fully. Not one.Companies will never be able to complain that those games wouldnt sell, if they havent even tried.
I disagree in one side, however, i love onrails and i hope theres always support for them on the wii. DC was great and i hope more in the future ALONG big budget Resident titles. The play great on the system and are mad fun.

WAW is a big good example. Even without the precedent of NOT having COD4 on the wii(Even tho COD3 MATCHED PS·3 SALES!!!!!!!!!!!!), and competing with itself and BEING NOTABLY GIMPED( something fixed in Reflex, the WHOLE experience is intact on the wii and the graphics were HIGHLY improved).

Even SO, WAW got good sales in just a year. And thats a 17 + non exclusive sales.
Resident 4 is the best example tho, it was late, a port, a game that could be played on the wii already and still sold nicely. Why?because it wasnt competing with a better version!.

Even so, i imagine that RE5 would sold twice as much as the 2 year old cube game(for the aforementioned facts). Im looking at 2 or 3 million figures here, and thats a Blockbuster no doubt.
I think finally capcom saw that and for good or wrong they tease us with the game as of late.

Assasins creed on DS but not wii? Sales of resident games on wii destroyed the Ds sales, sales of COD on wii destroyed DS sales. Mature games can sell on the DS, but they sell more in the wii.
So why was that? A bunch of nonsense from ubisoft.
NO, developers sometimes have no clue in what they are getting into. They see MW2 selling big time and we will too! they asume the market will embrace their efforts, and no, its not that way. They make mistakes. They go bankrupt. Wii market is fresher and is quite large for big budget third party games. Recognizable brands.Nobody would buy a better looking Conduit.Sales of NMH WONT be big on the 360(Look afro samurai for details).
Assasins creeds however?prince of persia?yes.
Or even better. An exclusive big, huge third party game. An exclusive CALL OF DUTY that has no "better "counterpart. After all, the porting costs, according to Activision, are no cheap(from HD to wii), so they might as better spend it on making the best wii exclusive experience.

Reflex looks almost always fantastic on the wii. Imagine if the engine and design of maps was in a way that didnt force the wii to sacrifice shaders and normal mapping in the emulation of the PS360 game. It can be done.It should be done, and it would look great and be a great experience that would make consumers confident on their product and purchase.Sales would be great, not affected by multiplat owners(as they would try a exclusive COD in between the yearly installment), and boosted by its presentation.

While japanese developers are in the boat(DQ X hopefully-Monster Hunter 3), western developers have to be less shy, and just give the core wii gamer what they want. The same the PS3 core gamer wants.
