Managed copy is the ability to create 1 legal backup copy of a Blu-ray movie in full HD. The standard was finally ratified the other day and from next year once the authentication server comes online all movie studio's will have to support it.

Yes.  It's about the ability to copy.

@czecherychestnut and this is why sony fail so bad...they just dont have the bility to a) tell the truth or b) quash reports like this fast enough to limit any damage

All i can do is just laugh my nuts off at such stupidity. Whats it got to do with Sony?. This stuff comes from the bluray disc association which contains dozens of companies.

The article suggests that they could charge you to make that copy too. Nowhere does it say copying is free for all discs.

Blu-ray discs get Managed Copy, hardware support nonexistent. Yet another reason why blue ray is a crock. I personally am sick and tired of this BS now and just wish BR would disappear. Why all the headache when I just want to watch a freakin movie and they keep moving the goal posts!!

Then you probably want also DVD's to disappear. All DVD movies have copy protection and there is no legal way to make a backup of DVD movie. Sure, there are many programs that enable you to copy DVD movies but all those backup copies are illegal (even if program is legal, discs would still be illegal). At least this system allows you to make 1 backup copy, DVD doesn't allow to make any copies at all.

Anyway, this doesn't even involve PS3 because PS3 BR can't write so it can't even make backup copies.

This is exactly the reason why I bought a PS3. PS3 Blu-Ray is future proof... It's called firmware updates. :)

Apparently it can't be done with just a firmware update there are no such player on the market yet. Not only that, the fucking BR player has to have an internet connection too lol, so it can go online and verify the disc, pretty sure the only BR player with net connection is PS3, and pretty sure people will torrent movies if the legal way to backup is akin to stomping on your nuts.

Actually internet connected Blu Ray is pretty common. This player is only $149 (but it doesn't have Wifi.)

The Op is trying to say he is pissed off because he can't copy his "Blu-ray"(since he mispelled it) movie that he buys. Something about Sony fails (Even though the BDA is comprised of more companies then just Sony. Also he just wants to watch a freakin movie and believes now he can`t watch a freakin movie because he has to buy a new player to copy that freakin movie. This is the reason he wants Blu-ray to disappear.

All in all, just a complaint thread with whine and cheese...

wow so we can still watch blu-ray just cant copy it...how big a deal is that?
