Forums - Gaming Discussion - IYO, what are the worst things this gen has brought to the table?

I don’t like how the industry is split in 2. I'm looking at the High Def and Standard Def split. For the last 2 generations we had consoles that put very similar quality renderings on our TV screens and did pretty much the same thing, except for Nintendo’s neglect of CD and DVD compatibility. It came down to the controllers, exclusives, and where your loyalties stood.

This generation though we are forced to make a decision that I don’t think gamers should be forced to make. We either take the visually lower end of the gaming industry in order to have our motion controls and games that are supported purely on game play but do very little to entice the visual senses. Or we forgo these motion controls, which may or may not be a gimmick depending on where you stand, for games that are visually stunning, beautiful and teaming with life.

The thing is for me, the Wii never delivered this amazing game play advantage. So it lost its purpose quite quickly. I did try to renew it with Mario games and other assorted 3rd party games but after the thrill of twilight princess, metroid prime 3 and warrioware wore off there was nothing solid on the system that interested me. I even tried to bring my love for Geometry Wars to the Wii but I found it to have huge control issues (I blame myself for not listening to IGN)

So I turned from Nintendo. And that’s what I hate, that I was forced out of my love for Nintendo. That Nintendo made me make that decision! I quickly realised that it wasn’t so much that I loved Nintendo, but I loved gaming. So it was a sad loss, but I am better for it. I would have preferred to still care about Nintendo given I spent so many years supporting them and now they are succeeding again it would have been a nice victory for me. But it seems as though I have one again gone with the potentially loosing system, the 360. Only because I prefer the controller over the ps3’s. It all came down to the position of the L and R triggers.

Such a fickle industry this is that customers would base their loyalty on something as small as the position of 2 buttons. But I prefer this kind of decision making over the monumental decision of Wii or HD

Variety in a particular market is supposed to be a good thing.  It offers people choices.

I won't touch on everything else I find wrong on this post, since it is mainly my opinion.

I agree with nothing of the sort

Okay, I completely admit I screwed up posting my opinion as a fact. Everyone has their tastes.

That is cool, and I agree with you on that point. I certainly understand why you prefer console RPGs to handheld ones, I used to be the same way.

Out-of-hand development costs.

Also, all the biased 'professionals'.

If we dissected your argument further, we could say that there even more divisions going on between those who chose to only stick to the 'HD consoles'.  Considering the fact that for much of their lifetime, both the hardware and software on those platforms were much higher than previous years, it forced people to choose one 'side'.  Causing yet another divide (360 vs PS3).  And even more than that, now we also have people choosing 'consoles vs handhelds' and 'PC vs consoles'.

So its not so cut and dry of those who decided to choose HD over the Wii.  There's a whole hodge-podge of divisions going on this gen, and none of it is helping gaming as a whole....except for putting money into the pockets of the producers of the most expensive and most heavily marketed games which are targeted at those groups.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I like yout insight Kenryoku.

I just had a thought thats helped me deal with the big splits that are going on. The industry is becoming like the car market. You have your super cars at the top (like your highend games) and you have your little cheep cars for A-B driving (like your nasty wii party games), and then hundreds of cars in between all designed to appeal to each person individual to their needs.

@ senlis: Given that this is an Opinion thread I have no problem with you voicing an opinion. But what I do have a problem with is you judging my opinion as 'wrong' based on 'your' opinion. Personaly, I prefered when all the consoles offered the same experience and we got to choose which console we liked for smaller more trivial reasons. Now we have to have every console in order to enjoy the full extent of what current gen gaming has to offer. I think the way each company has deviated so drasticaly from each other means that no one console now offers the full package. In the words of Motoko "over specialise, and you breed in weakness." Nintendo deviated from the graphics race and focused on motion controls. I personaly find the wii remote button layout disfunctional and the whole system does more to demote interactivity then promote it.

I realised this from playing assassins creed 2. The mapping of the 360's controler is intuitive, I think something and Ezio does it. Its not so much as I'm thinking about pressing a button but that the controler seamlessly becomes part of my nervousystem, creating a freeflowing gate way betwene my mind and the character on screen. then I played Twilight princess... and im stretching my thumb here and there and wiggling the remote and I so badly wished I could play it using the clasic controler because what I was being forced to do was focus on what I was physicaly doing, not focusing on what the game character was doing.

Like I said, this is all opinionated, and from my experiences I find pressing a button a more seamless gateway to the ingame world then wiggling and wagging and pointing a remote around in my living room. I cant engage in a game if im trying to find buttons or trying to keep my pointer within the confines of my TV screen.

The 360 then, doesnt quite offer the HD experience I prefer, in my opinio I find the ps3 to be just that little bit more able. I prefer PS Home and the playstation menu system. I feel the console is just better finished. but I prefer playing games on the 360 because I feel its more of a gamers console. The 360 vs ps3 differences are what I prefer in my consoles, not the huge deviation that nintendo has caused with the Wii. I think the wii offers something that is unique but at the same time there is a damn load of stuff it doesnt offer.

Thats why I think the worst thing to come out of this generation is the SD/HD split which has brought about the acceptance of low quality games thanks to the wiis last gen limitations. In closing I will use one little example to help illustrate this. The original Fable on the xbox was great for its time. But if Lionhead released that game now exactly how it was on the 360 people would be laughing. Hence we have fable 2 which is phenominaly better by any standard. The thing is wii games still carry this last gen Fable quality but because of the context they are in on the wii they are accepted and glorified! But when put in the context of the whole industry the games leave alot to be desired.

Some of you guys need to go reread the question. Paying for online and fanboyism didn't start in this gen, so they're pretty much irrelevant to this discussion.

@SnowWhitesDrug: I agree that Fable II fixes just about everything that was wrong in the first game, but you'll encounter many nostalgic people who think Fable was a game without flaws and then go about pointing out everything Fable II did wrong.
