Forums - Nintendo - Iwata (not laughing): ' We failed with the Wii'

Dammit I hate to meet these threads so crowded. Now everything has been said before me.

I'm glad they're admitting something, now, Nintendo. Get crackin' with some software that will surely help.

thats Iwata , hes an awesome guy and speaks his mind. unlike reggie and Cammie

Nintendo doesn't need to release better hardware or Star Fox or Pikmin or Wave Race or F-Zero or Pilotwings or any other core titles. It would be nice if they did but releasing GC and N64 IPs wouldn't have stopped the loss of momentum.

They need to have a 10M+ software idea every six months. I can see why they chose Animal Crossing (10M+ on DS). Wii Music was a risk but so was Wii Sports and Wii Fit. Wii Music has nothing to be ashamed of as a new IP. Some have called Nintendo foolish for relying on Wii Music but the same could have been said about Sports and Fit.

Third parties have been pathetic. I've come to think that they just have no idea what to do without processing power. The lack of M+ announcements is baffling.

“We failed with the Wii. We were unable to continually release strong software, and let the nice mood cool. We were unable to show a new game to become ‘the next thing.’ In the game market, once you’ve lost the momentum, it takes time to recover. With the price drop, sales returned to a certain level, but they just did not reach the level of last year around this time. We decided that it would be difficult to sell enough to recover from the poor performance of the first half of the year. In order to reach it (20 million target), we’ll have to move quite a large quantity, but it’s a figure we released after having felt the momentum returning [based off the price drop].”

Its basically the competition. The Wii price was always unsustainable IMO - and the competition has closed in price-wise, and their hand was forced.

But they shouldn't feel bad - how many times did the PS2 drop its price in the first 3...4 years? Heaps.

I think its completely amazing, that heading into the 4th Xmas for the Wii they finally dropped the price (and not a big drop either).

...

Once the PS3 slim sales launch sales dry up (and its happening now, may be under 200k globally next year), the Wii will be back to a pretty dominant position - and both Sony/MS have just about done all the price cutting they can.

The other issue is simply the lag from last Xmas... both Animal Crossing & WiiMusic *failed*. WiiMusic was always a risk - but AC was a failure IMO. Either a dev failure, marketing failure - or both. They really needed to do more on it.

Oh man I love Nintendo. They failed to reach their ridiculously lofty goals, and accidentally ONLY made the most successful revolution of video game history in the areas of controls, marketing, market expansion, making the industry more mainstream and accepted by families, girls, older gamers, lapsed gamers, convalescent homes, rehabilitation clinics, cruise ships, and even played live at the Oscars, and they also had the greatest comeback of all time in this industry, and did it with cheap outdated tech to boot! But that's not good enough for Nintendo. They want MOAR!!!

Damn! That's just the best post ever.

You know what? The shame isn't on Ninty, but on the 3rd-parties!

I believe that what Iwata is saying betwen the lines is:

"f*ck you third-parties! if you don't want to earn money, f*ck you!

"We know were we've mistaken: we thought that by now you would be putting your souls on games for Wii, but you aren't. What now? Now we will forget about you and awaken our software factory and overrun the market with Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, Mario. Wii lost its momentum and that was our fault: we trusted you!

"Now we know: forget about the 3rd-parties, release games non-stop and just forget about them: let them try to sell by matching our quality."

Nintendo wants more sales, but Iwata admitted they didn't have the games to continue the momentum.

Nintendo fans never want to admit that the games on Wii just aren't that strong.  They go back to talking about profits...which would be relevant if you were a Nintendo investor, but not so much if you are a core gamer.

Core games aren't the issue, core games aren't momentum drivers, in fact core games are irrelevant to what Iwata was talking about

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Damn right I want 'em, Pilotwings too but Nintendo don't NEED to release them.

I hope Nintendo uses Pilotwings as an M+ Mario Kart Wii.

at least some companies are able to admit to failure unlike a certain company that i happen to love

I wonder what company that could be... Oo

This is why I'm excited for Nintendo's lineup next year. They know that they need to continue with software that pushes boundaries, and I really think they're gonna do it.

Actually, I was just going back and reading the issues of Nintendo Power during the Wii launch. The magic of motion control was in full force, with Wii Sports and Twilight Princess being the big two games pushing this idea. "Man! I can't wait to actually shoot Link's bow!" "It's like I'm actually playing tennis!"... it was exciting because this motion control lessened the barrier between you and the video game. It was exciting because it was one step closer for me to be Link, or a tennis player, or an extreme truck driver. You were the character instead of someone sitting on the couch, and that was mind blowing.

Of course, after the honeymoon was over, many developers were still scratching their heads on how to correctly use Wii's unique controller. In essence, this is when waggle was started. Many developers took Wii's motion control and turned it into just another button press. Shake it to open a door, shake it to reload, shake it to swing your weapon, shake shake shake... this wasn't the control revolution I was expecting. Sure, the games themselves could be great games, but the barrier was once again there, and a lot of the time I was back to just being someone sitting on the couch.

And then WiiMotion+ came out, along with Tiger Woods 10 and Wii Sports Resort. Man, these two games rock. Full control of your golf club is an amazing feeling, even if it does cause you to shank it each and every time. I was the golfer, and that was huge. WSR had so many things to do and see, and it was all done extremely well through the controller. Swordfighting, Basketball, Waveboarding... it was all smile inducing because I really felt like I had an impact while playing.

So yeah, what I'm really trying to say is that Zelda Wii with WM+ support is going to be amazing.

Wow so it this a *hint* from Nintendo that they need to release a new console nest year with the likes of the rumored Wii HD??? I think that is you read between the lines here that is exactly what they are saying.
