Forums - Nintendo - (Crazy Rumor) Wii 2 Specs

How are they going to have a blu-ray drive when it's owned by Sony?

I hope it's true though.  And that it will be as powerful as PS3 and 360, because there's still the chance that some games that people were hoping to see beautiful hd versions of this gen could still make their way to Wii.

Blu Ray isn't "owned" only by Sony.

I stopped reading after the first "tidbit" about Wii 2 having a Blu-ray drive... it's more likely that Nintendo would try to resurrect HD DVD than license Blu-ray technology from their arch rival Sony.

Disney is big on blu-ray, so Disney might be wanting the Nintendo console to have a blu-ray drive to have their games on there.

Okay this is my speculation on the matter.  Disney wanted to put Epic Mickey on the HD consoles, but they saw that the Wii had a better demographic for the game.  While developing Epic Mickey, Disney discovered the Wii had all the right ingrediants for their upcoming games except for the necessary technology to realize their artistic aspirations for Epic Mickey and Kingdom Hearts 3.

So, they are promising Nintendo they will bring these stellar games to the Nintendo console as soon as its tech is up to par.  And they will use their pull in the blu-ray consortium to get a blu-ray in Wii 2.

The Wii 2 will release in 2010 with tech as good as in PS3 and 360 and a blu-ray drive and it will have launch titles including hd versions of Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid:  Other M, the Next Zelda, Epic Mickey, and Kingdom Hearts 3 on the way in 2011.

It will retail for $250 to $300.00.

Not a chance its true.

You've more chance of Nintendo using Cartridges again than a BLu Ray drive.

Has a rumour concerning Nintendo products (more than a few months in advance) ever been true?

Nope. Especially not specs. Nintendo never reveal specs...

It's fake.

That's all Nintendo had going for it with the GameCube. Back then, they advertised the GameCube as the Ferrari of that console generation (this was before Xbox was announced).

Blu-Ray isn't a "Sony format" any more than DVD was. Panasonic and a wide consortium of other companies are involved with Blu-Ray, Nintendo could simply get the drives from someone else.

Fall 2010 would be a year earlier, but I certainly wouldn't complain.

They could have third party games like Final Fantasy XIII and Dead Rising 2, and possibly upscale games like Metroid Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Epic Mickey to 1080p. Day 1 for me.

this is all a bunch of fake crap im sure

Nintendo won't use bluray or any expensive licensed disc type.

They would utilize one of the larger capacity disc techs that has a MUCH smaller license fee. Nintendo has never cared for catering to anything but gaming when it costs them as a manufacturer. The video services starting to come out don't cost Nintendo, instead they provide value.

A bluray player would not make piracy impossible as they already know how to get past its security and there are plenty of other options out there that could provide the same capacity and at a smaller cost.

I also don't see a trade-in program happening. Instead there will be a way to migrate your downloaded content to the new machine, but no discounts on newer hardware.

The only items right here is that there will eventually be a successor and it will have HD capabilities (for games).

Blu-Ray still has its security intact.. which is a big achievement in my view.. but seeing nintendo past offerings i will be surprise if they go for something mainstream.. they will like to get their own tech..

Interesting, but I strongly doubt it. You could say they mean something like bd, but then why mention films?

The rumour, however, does not make it clear if it is just a Wii HD or a proper Wii 2

I'd love to see this come true next year. It would allow the arguements to end concerning developers on Wii with specs like that. HD and BR drive would allow developers to have a quality PS3 title release for Wii2 with very similar results. Processing won't be anything like the cell chip but I don't think a chip that powerful is necessary for gaming anyway. I think the chipset would be more conservative but of a better quality and speed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this fantasy to become a reality.
