england's has words about crushing the scots

scotland's is about rising against the english

argentina's had words about the wars of independence

an anthem is designed to raise patriotic emotions and make you proud to be of your homeland. besides, i love the american national anthem. "in the land of the free and the home of the brave" sounds very nice, and the whole first verse is, imo, great to listen to. (i love the rendition in the movie "Curly Sue". XD

I'm the opposite, I think that for that exact same line it's a bit "arrogant", if I can use the term

I dunno. Having an anthem mentioning God is one thing, having an anthem with Mother Mary in it is another thing (especially as the United Kingdom becomes increasingly diverse in religion).

well it may be a bit arrogant, but america WAS known as "the land of the free" so it kinda makes sense. arrogance or pride?

That's a good point.

Come to think of it, pretty much every contender for National Anthem involves religion in some way, except Rule Britannia, but that's not an anthem so much as a war chant.

As usual, Futurama has the answer to the problem

Eventually, political correctness will take it to be the only religion allowed in UK     ...Or at least the only one allowed to talk, obviously always including a disclamer for every single religion in each statement, phrase, sermon, etc, taking every other religion to (un-?)natural extinction due to impossibility to preach and proselytize.

Fun fact: The UK is 92.1% White. London is 69.4% White.

Which would explain why London hates the BNP (also because Londoners are smartest )

Ours even mixes the monotheistic God with the Roman goddess of Victory    I'm quite surprised Fascism didn't extensively use it and it was instead only adopted after its fall, and approved by commies too!    Italian politics is sometimes (NOT!, better to say "often" ) incomprehensible even to us

Nike?

On a Google search, her Roman name is Victoria. Interesting, is Victoria Italian for Victory?

On a different topic, Life of Brian is the funniest movie ever made.

Im guessing Victoria will be Latin for Victory.

Life of Brian... I agree with you on that one.
