It does kind of suck that you have to pay $8 on PS3, and then XBL costs $4 (I don't know). Does this do anything the 360 can't?

It doesn't matter for me anyway, because none of this affects the UK. I am more interested in the Play TV update which claims means it can get HD channels.. which it doesn't seem able to do

Is there a $4 option for the 360? I have the $10 dollar or so variant (1 disc at a time, Blu-Ray upgrade), and I thought that was the cheapest (-blu-ray of course) that had streaming.

Isn't it just part of XBL Gold, which costs $4 per month, I am told

I paid 35 for Live for 13 months, from Amazon, so 2.70 or so a month...your mileage may vary depending on specials you find, location etc.

However, streaming from Netflix is something you get from Netflix, not Live.  So you are paying 8 to Netflix for the right to stream to any streaming, enabled device.  For me, that means my PC, my PS3 and my 360.

Sorry, to get back on topic, no I did not reserve the disc, as I currently use my 360 to stream to my primary TV.

the titles are not HD, netflix does not stream HD

Yeah it does.

I've been doing Netflix HD streaming on my 360 ever since it launched.  Gotta love catching up on Heroes.

G4tv posted an article that clarifies the service. If you don't feel like reading it:

  • The disc is an interim solution.  It is the fastest way to enable the service for the PS3.  They are working on an application that will work without the disc.
  • The PS3 version has access to the same catalog as the 360 and PC version.
  • Netflix charges the same for PS3 users as they do for 360/PC users.  (The difference is their is no additional PSN charges for the PS3).

Netflix coming to PlayStation 3 next month is good news for PlayStation 3 owners (and Xbox 360 users whose primary reason for a Gold membership has been easy Netflix streaming access). But several questions about Netflix coming to Sony's platform weren't answered in the announcement release. Is there HD streaming? Why do I need a disc to access it? I spoke with Netflix's VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey on the phone this morning to clarify these points and others. Again, good news: you should be happy with these answers, too. Yes, Netflix on PlayStation 3 supports HD streaming. The entire Netflix streaming catalogue -- HD or not -- that's currently available on the PC, via Netflix-supporting TVs and, yes, through Xbox 360 will be available for PlayStation 3 users on day one. Swasey admitted Netflix's streaming catalogue isn't nearly as vast as its disc catalog, but said it's something they're actively expanding every day. At the outset, in order to access Netflix on your PlayStation 3, you'll need to pop in a disc. The disc is free and yours to keep. All you need to do is ask for one and keep it nearby when you want to access Netflix streaming. That's not permanent. Swasey confirmed Netflix will have an "embedded solution" (i.e. a proper application, ala Xbox 360) "at some point," but couldn't say when. Swasey wouldn't comment on speculation that it's a disc-based solution at the moment to get around whatever exclusivity contract the company currently has with Microsoft. Regardless, PlayStation 3 users will eventually have a more elegant way to access Netflix that doesn't require a disc, but according to Swasey, this was the "fastest and easiest way to get PlayStation 3 members now." Netflix has not announced a specific date for when it will start shipping the Netflix-enabling Blu-ray discs for PlayStation 3 owners, but it's happening sometime in November. If you want to be at the top of the list, I recommend linking your account right now.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Source, link?

I have watched HD content - it reads 'Presented in HD' on several titles - including:

Extreme Engineering

Star Trek TV series

IMAX flicks and quite a few others.

I live in Canada, so it's not like I could use this anyways. Ps3mediaserver works just fine for me anyways.

So you just pay for Live and then you get netflix free? Or Live and then netflix?

Also this working on all Bluray players sounds good for people with neither.

You have to pay for Live AND Netflix.

So you have to pay the Live monthly/annual fees and the $8 monthly fees for Netflix subscription.

With PS3 you only have to pay the $8 Netflix subscription.

Okay, I thought Netflix was free with gold... my bad

So, you subscribe to Netflix once, and you can watch it on PC, 360 and now PS3?

I'll probably continue to use my 360 for instant streaming (for what little quality titles are available, that is) and my PS3 for the BluRays I get from Netflix. Then everybody gets the love.

EDIT:  And yes, Netflix DOES stream HD content, especially the TV shows.  The Office on Netflix streaming looks almost as good as it does on NBC HD.  The movies that stream in HD however are mostly crap.
