Forums - Nintendo - Core gamers and magazines/sites hyping NSMB Wii worries me

hype and word of mouth are one and the same.

^^^Huh? The game isn't even out, so it can't have any word of mouth. Hype can build pre-release, but you can't have word-of-mouth without a product-in-hands.

I'm starting to wonder if this game will actually do worse than expected long-term due to Super Guide. No one wants to feel like they are being babied.

And to whoever said that sales of 5 million wouldn't be a bomb... I disagree entirely. When Mario Kart is on it's way to 25 million lifetime sales, for a main series 2D Mario designed to anchor 2009 holiday, and really a lot of 2010, lifetime sales of 5 million would be a disasterous failure and an embarassment for Nintendo. And even sales of 10 million would pretty much be a bomb. This game needs to sell at LEAST 15 million to be considered a success.

word of mouth is people talking to each other. Your post makes no sense.

I think even Nintendo themselves dont want the game to be hyped they want it to be silent as possible. its the word of mouth wants to make the hype for them.

Not really. Just a few days ago Miyamoto spent like, an hour and a half or something, talking about it. Videos have been launched promoting the more hardcore side of it. They obviously want the hype, because it does work when your game is mainstream and really good. Look at SMB3 for instance.

There's nothing new here. 'Internet sites' and 'Magazines' hype all major Nintendo releases like Mario Galaxy or Zelda games. They do it because they hype anything they know will be popular and sell well. They don't want to be caught unaware.

What they SHOULD be doing is be putting more attention into the under-appreciated Wii/DS titles.

And hype is a company building up a product through marketing and the media.

Word of mouth is largely neutral until people can say something concrete about the game. Certainly people can talk about the game before it releases, and one of the goals of Nintendo promoting the game pre-release is to get people talking, but that is only about product awareness. It can't turn into the advocating which resulted in evergreen sales for Nintendo titles this gen without an actual product.

word of mouth is a marketing strategy

People can say concrete things about the game. They can relate it to past iterations of the game and they can pass on excitement. Excitement breeds excitement.

look up word of mouth marketing and hype......here I'll save you a step

Wow, weird thread... Yushire, if I rfecall correctly you used to post loads but you have been missing in action for ages now, welcome back!

OT - Yes, people are hyping this games, but essentially in a sales sense. But it is unfair to compare to WSR and Muramasa (or Madworld). This is a ... Mario! No hype needed. Now, it clearly won't sell DS like numbers but it'll sell. And I think everyone is pretty clear on that.

Now, you call this game core but Mario is pretty main stream so will surely bot fall the Metroid route. And I think Nintendo will take all the hype they can get.

I think the only doubt is its eventual impact on HW numbers. Here, you hear a bit of everything and I am sure some might be disappointed due to exagerated expectations.

Why the hell not? I keep hearing this and I don't understand why!

Nobody was saying that Mario Kart Wii could beat Mario Kart DS but guess what? It did! How? Basically because it looked fun to play and because it was very easy for somebody to come over to a Mario Kart Wii owners house and try it for themselves. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is exactly the same except it's a main entry 2D Mario platformer. Not to mention that it will be the big game for the Wii for the first non-supply constricted-first price cut-holiday.

How is it CLEAR that it won't sell 19 million units? Sure that is a lot but how can you be so sure?

Ok, it is not clear but that's how I feel. The DS is defined by a number of games but NSMB is one that you typically purchase with it or while you have it. The Wii is more defined by its motion control (which to counter your MK Wii argument, the Wii used very well with the Wii wheel) and games like Wii Sports and WSR. So yes, I believe it will sell but would be suprised if it got close to 19 million.

Im not really fond of pre orders and first month sales. Just look at GTA IV I even argue with some HD console fans here that the game will be stagnant. And now look at what happened.

Im sorry if Im harsh but I think core gaming sites should stay away from NSMB. Its not for core gamers they should hyped COD 12 and Halo 6 more.(I included the spinoffs and console ports)

I'm surprised. You're telling core gamers to hype casual games like Halo and Call of Duty.....

I really dont consider Halo and COD to be a core game, but core gamers and HD consoles can have that... Its been milked to death anyway the franchise I mean. As long as coire gamers and sites dont consider NSMB Wii as a core game. Im sorry its not I dont like core gamers personally but I dont like what core gamers represents on the Wii.

end of core gaming days prediction:

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.

E3 2010- Tape runs out

no offense, and im not a gramma nazi or anything, but i couldn't make any sense of the OP ....it was so juggled up that i could only understand the bare minimum of not wanting it hyped cause it destroys sales...

which i have to disagree and we'll leave it at that cause i need to go take a crap >.>
