a game that sells worse than anticipated
joora:
I think you're being a bit unfair to No More Heroes and Zack & Wiki. No More Heroes has sold more than any of Suda's other games, so I'd say it's not really a flop. The publisher seemed happy with the results too. Same with Zack & Wiki, Capcom said they were happy with the results and there's some talk of a sequal. You don't really make sequals for "flops". :p
PES also had the misfortune of coming out much later than the PS3/XBox 360 versions, which may have had some influence on its sales.
marvelous held a party over no more heroes shipment numbers 400k, a while ago at that, which makes me wonder if it is under tracked,
zack and wiki is in an only recently revived genre, seriously over a third of a million and still selling a few thousand copies a week is quite good, and I don't think it ever had a single tv spot in the US
NiGHTS, probably but we don't know how it did in Europe
arbitrarily assigning 500k as a the bar for a game isn't a good way to determine success or failure, by that logic Atlus, snkp or NIS and a bunch of other smaller/niche publishers have a 100% failure rate
different games have different expectations,
if GTA4, or GT 5 or Super Mario Galaxy sold 500k worldwide it'd be a flop,
if Rondo of swords sold that much it be a smashing success,
I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!
NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the only game on the original list that flopped was Nights? That's...not too shabby.
Zack and Wiki was no way a flop! A title like that pushing 500k? And NMH is still too early to decide but I could see it crossing the big 500. Only NiGHTS I see as a flop.
My Games of 2011:
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Super Mario 3D Land
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
I kinda agree, You can't declare NMH a flop, its still to early to tell
Ok, maybe my flop indicator of 500k is a bit off. I thought that given Wii population of near 25 million, 500k was a decent number of sold games. Both NMH and Z&W are niche games and (probably) had fairly low dev costs, so maybe the flop indicator should be around 300k for those games :)
But it's still a shame that they didn't sell much better, they both deserve it.

.
I think it's pretty sad how many people in this thread so thouroughly dismissed No More Heroes months before it was to launch. The game may not have been a massive runaway success, but it was a pretty big seller, especially for a Mature, violent, "niche title" on the Wii with almost no advertising or marketing behind it.
Perhaps a new thread like this should be made including games like Deadly Creatures, Fatal Frame IV, Monster Lab, Monster Hunter 3, Tales of Symphonia, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Star Wars Force Unleashed, and a few others.
I think Star Wars on the Wii will be a success. The drive to swing that lightsabre and blast physical force powers will be too strong for many to deny, graphics notwithstanding. It could end up being a showpiece for Nintendo if it outsells the Xbox360 adn PS3 versions as they can really tout the "gameplay is really more important than graphics" deal.
@resident hazard I think that's a good idea for a thread and in fact if no one will do it I will gladly make it happen...(damn my grammar sucks..for someone named Graham...)
