Forums - Gaming - Why the PS3 will stay in 3rd the rest of the way

With the PS3 comming out with a cheaper SKU or adjusted price range about every two months now why should people jump on any price cut without thinking it will just be cheaper two months later? Sony is succeeding in confusing the consumer and making their situation look much worse than it needs to with all this confusing back peddling in BC support and now a total of four SKUs.

360 has a growing fanbase, it has momentum, it has the head start, but most importantly it has the PS3's games in addition to its own and continues to gobble up titles that once would have been PS3 exclusives.

You know, the fact that the PS3 is selling as much as the xbox360 did isn't a very good point since the PS3 has had waaaaay better sales in Japan than xbox ever did. After one year of sales in J the ps3 sold roughly 3 times the number of units that xbox360 did in two years. That's saying a lot about what you ask me? that's saying a lot about the sales of the xbox in the USA and Europe. Face it, when you compare PS3 and xbox360 with that knowledge you start to see the true differences in the sales of these two consoles

360 will be last place for several reasons, only sells in NA, it will be on the market the shortest, we have even heard reports that Microsoft is already working on the 720. 360/PS3 are selling at the same rate, none of Sony's big titles have hit the market as of right now.

Do you have references saying the Xbox 360 will be on the market the shortest? And it's not uncommon for console makers to be developing the next console shorty after the current one is released.

If you go by how long Xbox was on the market Xbox will be the shortest. Also MicroSoft makes money by forcing people to upgrade. This is what they do with their software and they what they did with Xbox 1. As soon as the 360 come out they basically retired the old Xbox. Not good business IMO.

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

@krik - They aren't making money on the 360 hardware, so that thought-process fails. I'm betting that software/hardware was lagging for the 360, so they decided to get a jump-start on the next-gen. Seems to be working for them so far.

So Microsoft stopped manufacturing the Xbox to force people to move on to the next genereation? So I guess that whole bit about Nvidia ceasing production on the GPU is just a lie? So they could've continued making the Xbox and they decided to kill it and leave money out there? /sarcasm

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

If they didn't negotiate properly with Nvidia is their problem, not mine. I was not involved with the deal at all, believee me ;)

Hopefully Microsoft negotiated a better deal with (crappy) ATI this time around but if they didn't, and instead signed another 4 year contract, then the 360 has a little less than 2 years left.

I figured it was obvious MS had to drop the Xbox and get a head start for this generation. Do you really think the 360 would have been as succesful if it launch along side the PS3? Yeah some people might have felt screwed but it has worked out great for MS and that is what matters to them. It was good business because it was the only way MS could even consider competing in this generation after over 100 million had bought a PS2.

360 is doing little better than the original Xbox did. In 2 years 360 sold only about 2M more than the old XB in it's first 2 years. This is not even a 20% performance increase over the old xbox.  This is not good IMO since Xbox had much more competion (the PS2 was out first).

We will see how the next 2-3 years turn out... right now the Wii is kicking ass (I can't understand why but it is :( )

PS3 will come second mainly because of its brand and many people waiting for price drops or specific exclusives(MGS4,FFXIII,GOW3,GT5 etc). The X360 sells mainly in NA now,is non-existence in Japan and is just there in EU. The PS3 however is doing well in Japan, alright in NA and quite good in EU. If the X360 wasnt so NA heavy then it could come second but because MS cant crack the JPN or EU market(except UK) very much and so they will fail completely and even if by some freak market shift they did get second place MS would have still lost because they wont be out the red and very unlikely to have made a profit.
MS will shoot themselves in the foot by releaseing the XBOX3 too early and gamers rejecting it because it was released to early. Which in turns also kills X360 sales because consumers wont know which one to get and when they ask staff the staff will say either PS3 or Wii.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

First off, brand name doesn't mean as much as you think. See ps1 vs dreamcast. Second, the x360 doesn't just sell mainly in NA it blows away Ps3 in NA. Japan is almost a lost cause and EU is closer than you lead to believe. Then you state the 360 is going to fail completely because of rrod. They wrote off the warranty program this year. That means... That next year incoming profits! What a complete failure!!! (sarcasm) Your next point is even more comical. People are not going to buy a xbox360 because the 360 came out before the ps3 and wii. There fore they will ask staffers which consoles they want. (lol) The staffers will then tell them not to purchase the system with the most games but to buy the other systems because.. Yeah. This was a funny post. I swear ps3 fanboy logic is reaching new low.
