I agree Alekth. Microsoft got exactly what they paid for. What Namco does with the money is their business.

ok...so youre saying it would be ok for developers to re-release a port thats year old for full price.......SONY shouldn't pay for anything they are basically ensuring that NAMCO isnt rippin us off with cash in port |
Um no. Sony getting this exclusive stuff is proof of what I am saying. They demand loyalty from people. Microsoft could've never received this type of respect if the tables had turned. Sony may not have to pay for the game, but should fund the extra content to make their version better themselves. To make the company use the funds given to them from another company is an underhanded business move. Sony was just pissed that they couldn't out bid Microsoft, so they treated Namco like dogs.
Looks like Namco, Microsoft, and Sony all benefited one way or another.
Namco saved money on development costs.
Microsoft more than doubled their fan base in Japan.
Sony still got the game without much effort.
On the other hand, a lot of JRPG fans sure got screwed over...

Yes plenty.
And yes... the PS3 version is much better due to the ton of extra content.
Full voice acting
New playable Character (Patty)
lots of new minigames, new cutscenes, new subplots, new quests(from the main game), new songs, new towns, new bosses, new dungeons, boss fight replays, new artes, new skills, new equipment, scene skipping and connectivity with Tales of VS.
Saying it was "Much better" was actually an understatement. The 360 version is like a beta compared to the PS3 version.

Thats not the point. Sony not paying for the extra content in their version is the problem whilst allowing Microsoft to cover their ends. Thats very bad business.
That was Microsoft's decision and I'm pretty sure it was worth it for them for 1) giving their console much more attention and recognisable brand in Japan and 2) stalling Sony's business. Namco isn't Sony's studio, Sony doesn't have to pay for what they do. Sony however has to approve the game for their console and those are their conditions. Had Namco put out the game for both consoles from the very start, Sony wouldn't have demanded the extra content. |
The contract was for timed exclusivity. Of course Microsoft knew about the details, because it was their contract (lol). You're right about Microsoft slowing down Sony, but as you can see Sony is penalizing Namco for makes a timed exclusive with Microsoft. They should be business people and show that they care for their consumers besides their own egos. They should pay for their own content, but as I said, Microsoft paid for it. If someone offered you millions to fund your game in a bad for timed exclusivity wouldn't you take the money? if the tables were turned Microsoft would never blackmail Namco like that, because they couldn't afford to do it. Business is business and Sony proved that they had to have their egos served before paying to get their fans more. Namco even said the 360 fans deserve to have this extra content themselves, but it would be near impossible.

That's pretty wise... too bad I'm in the last group :/ (I did cave in and bought a 360 for that game too)
As for Sony paying for the extra content, no reason to. Sony will make some money from the licensing. Some more units sold to the fans. Namco is still getting the majority of the profits from that game. Up to them whether they want to make it, but obviously it's worth the extra revenue (and the extra not-killing-your-franchise-in-Japan factor).
MS paid for the exclusivity, Namco accepted the cash. Come on, it's not like it was impossible to develop for the PS3 at the time, it was just easier and in this case a lot more profitable not to.
edit: @S.T.A.G.E. There are a lot of game from 3rd party studios for which neither MS nor Sony paid anything. There is no need to pay at all, the studio makes the games to profit from them, they should expect their revenue from there. MS decided that it was good to pay to receive the special treatment, and got what they paid for.
Now Namco wants to sell a year old game at full price, WHY shouldn't Sony demand extra content (for one it stops the game becoming more harm than good to the console for being a late port,, messy seconds), for another it's good for the fans to have the extra content.
It's Namco wanting the special treatment here, not Sony. They have to do the extra work/take the extra cost. And it's pretty certain they will manage to cover it.

Yeah like Nintenod still overcharge for their outdated hardware. Sony has already lost their butts with PS3 and we benefited from it.

Blu Ray survived. Sony benefitted, but the PS3 didn't, hence the 10 year plan.

I understand where you're coming from, but you're not getting what I am saying. Microsoft paid for special treatment, so why doesn't Sony. Sony has their fingers around Japan like the Yakuza. This is why they get special treatment with JRPG's without having to pay like Microsoft would. It is a double edged sword in this business that Japan only seems to play a part in.
